Once you've installed ESXi and given it a management IP, you can use your browser to connect to it. From there it will have a link to download the client that was previously mentioned.

ESXi is very simple stuff - it holds your hand through most things. Once you have it installed you'll be zipping around it in no time.

Your plans look fine.

oh and if you are contemplating NAS duties for it (which is perfectly fine) I suggest to look at data recovery from you VMDK's before you leap all in. It is not tough at all, just slightly more complex than putting it into a usb caddy and copying your files off. It's all learning - which is good!
