Right. I think I know how this is going to go but I'm going to stick my neck out anyway.

This film always came up in converastions about foreign movies. Being a big fan of world cinema I decided to check it out yesterday and was... quite disappointed.

The good things about the film were the lighting and camerawork - that was about it. The plot was paper-thin, as were the characters who didn't endear you at all to them and had no real development. I get the idea that the inner circus is in a way exemplary of the outer circus but so what? Nice point. It didn't stop me from being bored about halfway through.

The future is one massive big top and we're all going to pot. It's not like that idea hasn't been done before in so many ways. The film hammed the same point in a stylish way, thinking it was delivering a powerful message with kid gloves while at the same time being too wrapped up in itself. It was like watching a stand-up comic play purely for his own amusement rather than that of the audience.

Or maybe it's just me. Did anyone else think this film was overrated?

It was OK but I prefer Amelie and The City of Lost Children. Didn't really think Delicatessen was anything special.

One of my favourites.

I see it as Escapism. Both literal and metaphorical. The art direction is fantastic throughout and while it covers ground that has already been trodden, it does so in a fresh, kitsch manner.

Have to agree with penski, I love how the mise-en-scene is constructed and how it is directed, the overall 'frenchness' is what made is stand out for me, many scenes were effectively painted and looked real nice.

I'd like more recommendations on french cinema though, obviously seen Amelié but my knowledge doesn't go much further.

Mhmm. Bought it on DVD a couple of years ago after a few recommendations from friends who i normally share film taste with, watched it, concluded that it was "meh" and haven't watched it since. :p

There's my in-depth review. Enjoy.

I've enjoyed.... La Haine, 8 Women, 36 Quai de Ouvres, Cité des enfant perdus. La Haine is an awesome film.
