Hi folks,

So while waiting for my 1080 FTWs to turn up I've been thinking of other stuff to mess with... I blame Ben@EVGA entirely for anything I've purchased whilst waiting :) (just kiddin fella)

I've been a bit annoyed for a while at my 6700k, the temps are annoyingly spikey at times - yes it will spike as it comes under load but the occasional jump to 80c for no reason (masses of liquid cooling) isn't good enough. Anyway, i've decided i'll delid it but given i've never done that before what is the general thought on the two options below:

  1. Delid, apply not **** paste and replace IHS
  2. Delid and apply decent paste, leaving the die naked

I'm aware the naked die is vulnerable but curious as to whether its going to make a lot of difference, from what i've read/watched the temp drops even replacing the IHS are pretty solid.

Cheers!

IHS back on. Several of us found that with Haswell and Ivybridge we got worse temperatures with the cpu naked than with the IHS back on. My temps were around 10 degrees C worse when running naked and that was using the EK Naked Ivy mount kit. The theory is that with the IHS back on the heat has a greater area to dissapate so runs cooler. I have CLU between the chip and IHS and Gelid Extreme between the IHS and block. I also lapped the IHS as was very concave and then stuck it back on using black gasket sealant.

Good to know, looking like its going back on - thanks for the info on the thermal compounds also, hadn't heard of CLU so will take a look at that. I also hadn't thought about polishing out the IHS so again will look in to some tips to do that.

Edit: Can I ask why you didnt use the CLU on the IHS/Block - doesn't perform as well there or? I've just added both of these to my 1080 order so should be good to go when I get it all.
