Delidded CPU survey - Modern Intel CPU's, would you delid just for lower temps?

What are the results like then, don't keep us in suspense. :)

Bearing in mind I do have to balance my cooling system somewhat and do bias it towards running the 1080s at 2ghz core speeds then my CPU operates around 4.7GHz 24/7

The delid smashed my temps down pretty hard and that was before replacing the lid.

I remember cutting the traces on a expensive socket A cpu with a scalpel.

Extremely risky thing to do but you had to do that to unlock the multiplyer.

As I was benching with a promethia it was worth the risk.
It didn't post at first as I didn't cut deep enough the first time. But second time it posted :)

Delid seems safe enough to me but I would only bother if my temps were very poor or I need every last % of performance.

I want to delid my 6700k but do not want to risk messing about with stanley knifes, hammers ect I can not see how to get the delid mate anymore, its gone from Overclockers. Or does anyone offer a delid service? Maybe i should just wait and pass it on and upgrade to a binned one of the newer CPU`s on the next upgrade.

^ just getting an already binned and delid one removes all risk and you get the performance you want.

We sold hundreds and hundreds of 7700K like this.

Pick up a cheap 3D printed one from an auction site? Or ask in Wanted section in the Members Market to loan one, pay postage both ways. :)

I wouldn't delid unless I wanted to push the chip to the limit, I certainly wouldn't do it just for lower temperatures... Why would I care if the CPU spikes to 50C or 40C during a gaming sesh? I've got a custom loop with a 240 + 480 rads and I haven't even bothered including my 6700k into it, just my 1080ti. The 6700k is sitting 4.4Ghz @ 1.25v with a Cryorig air cooler and it's cool and quiet. All the water is dedicated to the GPU, because that's where it's actually needed!

You have enough rad space for two Ti with that configuration and the Cpu.

Absolutely, but the Cryorig fans (SP120's) make less noise than the rad fans so all I would gain is a lower max temp on the CPU which makes no difference to anything, and the downside is that the rad fans would ramp up quicker than they do now.

When I need to push this CPU further for gaming performance then I'll be glad of the option and I could consider a delid at that time... But right now, I just don't need it.

The GPU on the other hand, that's just a serious heat source and I wouldn't consider running it on air.

Reason I posted this info is that the OP said he delid non K chips in the past, and in my opinion that's just pointless, as is a delid of chips with a mild overclock (like mine).

I recently delidded my 4790k. Temps improved loads, I didn't really do it for overclocking, but I run at 4.6ghz now.

Actually, I was half hoping I broke it and had an excuse to upgrade, but no such luck.
