Hey guys,

I think it's well established that the Dells are nice monitors, and good for HD gaming on the 360. But for non-HD gaming, such as the PS" of Wii, I've heard the image gets scaled up something awful.

On the HD hybrid front a friend of mine has some Samsung which I don't know the model of and that does everything just as it is meant to be done. TV is good, PC is good and no-HD gaming is good (he is yet to try the HD as he is waiting for his 360, but I don't suppose it is going to be bad).

What is the big difference that makes the Dell do such awful scaling while the Samsung can display it perfectly?

2 things, the scaler in the dell is awful (not that the sammy one is great, assuming its the bordeaux)

The dell scales up to 1080p instead of 720p meaning its scaling to a much higher res, and as a byproduct of the source being 480p the final image is crappier.

Just been playing around with my 2007WFP, and I'm not sure the scaling is the whole problem. Just been playing Oblivion at 800*480 (similar to widescreen DVDs 720*480) and while it obviously looks pixelated, it does still look fine and perfectly useable. In contrast when I had my original xbox connected to the same screen via s-video, playing a widescreen game like PGR2, it looked hideous.

I think it might be more to do with the quality of the 'secondary' inputs on these Dell screens (component, s-video, composite). Lots of people have said the component on the 2407WFP is much worse than using VGA at the same res on a 360. I guess Dell just throw the secondary inputs in as a cheap extra to entice a few extra buyers, without necessarily making the inputs high quality.
