Hi,

I was looking to buy a new PC in a month or so, and would really like to go for a 24 inch screen (i have toyed with 2 x 22, but i'm not sure i really have the desk space). I have been mainly looking at the Dell screens, and have heard good things on this forum about the 2407 (less so the 2408), particularly the A04 revision. I will be using the monitor mostly for web browsing/code/games, but also photo/video editing etc (pretty much everything i guess). Does anyone own it and recommend it, or should i be looking at a different monitor? I'll be honest and say i like the look of these monitors, and although i have heard good things about the BenQ screens, i think the Dells really look a lot better...

I have heard that there were some problems with ghosting that were corrected in the A04 revision - does the newer HC model suffer from any new problems? I was also wondering about the image quality and response when running a PS3/xBox through the component input - does it work as well as the HDMI inputs on the newer models?

I've had a 2407WFP A04 for over a year now and love it to bits. It's the best single piece of computer equipment I've ever bought.

If you can find a 2407 A03 or A04 in good nick then go for it. The A02 and before had various issues and the A03 only lacks the A04's 1:1 pixel mapping which may or may not be important to you (generally only is with 1080p sources).

The 2407HC is reported by many to have ghosting issues while the 2408 has major lag problems and I mean major! I have one at work and you can feel the lag just moving your mouse around the screen - it's really quite disconcerting.

Doing a little more reading around the A04, i have found that it has only a 72% colour gamut (can anyone confirm this?). Will i notice the difference between this and the 92% gamut of the HC version (i'm not big into photography, and certainly not to a professional level)? I will be upgrading from a 19 inch Sony SHM-95somethingorother (nearly 2 years old), and to be honest, i think the colour representation is alright - i would presume that the 2407 A04 probs has better colour representation than my current Sony?

Unless you need very very accurate colour reproduction for graphics work then the 2407 will be fine. It's still light years ahead of an TN panel.

I actually prefer my 2407 to the 2408 at work, the latter's colours seem a bit too vibrant if you know what I mean. No amount of tweaking with settings has managed to get it as much to my liking as the 2407 is.

Also remember that it's only very recently that we've been seeing affordable mid-range high-gamut monitors. The ACD (Apple Cinema Displays) used by many photos are all 72%.

I think wide-gamut is a bit of snake oil for most users personally. For watching video you want 72% as that's the color space of HD video content. If you are doing pre-press then by all means get a wide-gamut, but don't think it's a panacea just because it's got a higher number in the tech spec column vs. another monitor (see also the ridiculous claims of 3000:1 contrast ratio which most sane people turn off as it makes the picture worse).

Cheers for the replies guys. I was of the opinion it probably wouldnt make much difference - it is good to know that 72% is the colour range of HD, thanks philjohn. Anyways, sibce i wont be doing serious photo work, this sounds pretty good to me, i'll keep an eye out for one (was actually sniped trying to buy one on 'a popular auction site' last night, much to my annoyance...).

Hi guys - sorry to resurrect this thread, but i managed to get hold of a Dell 2407wfp A04 and still have a few questions. I am really pleased with it, no dead pixels and all seems well, except that the screen seems to get pretty hot at the air vents (pretty warm to the tough). I presume this is normal (and until today it has been pretty hot), but just wanted to check with someone else.

Secondly, i tried my mates xBox 360 through the component input (outputting 1080i), and although the picture was very good (no lag etc) there was some slight image tearing. I think this is to do with the refresh rate, but i could find an option on the screen or xBox to change this. Anyone have any solutions?

Thanks

I have the A04 and it is indeed a superb monitor.

As for your problem, it does get rather toasty but that's just the built in PSU.. so don't worry.

I can't comment on the 360 problem but I could try my sons and see if I get the same problem you report. I don't know much about the 360 but I was under the impression that settings where automatic.

Yeah, i am really pleased with it - after the initial shock of how large it was, its great! Thanks for the reply - don't go out of your way to find out, i am not desperate. The xbox did seem to set up most things automatically, it just seems to judder on a few frames (sort of thing vsync on most PC games fixes, but we couldn't find an option for that on the xbox).
