Hey folks,

Just got myself a Dell 2408WFP 24" monitor with firmware A00 from an online auction site. Got this at a bargain price, the owner never took it out of the box so its considered new. Heck it was so new that I had to cut the sticky tape on top so I guess the owner bought it but never opened it.

This monitor has a lot to live up to considering my this is an upgrade from a Samsung SyncMaster 226BW which is a very good monitor itself (upgraded more for the resolution ;))

Got some questions for you monitor peeps:
- It hasn't got a service tag but since these monitors were released mid-2008 is it still under the 3 year warranty?
- Can Dell accept the serial number for technical support such as firmware updates, etc?
- Is it worth me getting Dell (even if I pay) to get the firmware updated to A02? I'll be using DVI with my PC and for my Xbox it'll be the VGA cable.
- With my Xbox is it worth getting the HDMI cable even though VGA supports HD resolutions?

Thanks for your help guys :)

Do you mind telling me how much you paid for it? I have exactly the same monitor and am trying to get rid of it because the input lag is so bad - can't really game on it. Thanks.

Do you still have the original box with the Dell "Work Order Number" on it?

Also, do you know from what retailer it was initially bought from?

I ask because this is the info Dell warranty need to cover you under warranty (as well as the serial number on the back of the monitor itself).

I don't know if you can get Dell to install new firmware for you (possibly at a price), but I would definitely suggest asking. The A00 is a very nice monitor, but it suffers from some of the worst input lag on modern monitors. If you can get it updated to A04 you will have much less of an issue.

That said, input lag affects different people differently, I gamed for about a year on a A00 and I couldn't tell.

I paid 225 new & sealed ... but the owner ripped off the delivery sticker with his details which I guess had the Dell info :(

Thats an amazing price, I just sold my a01 for 350 and it had been used for a year! Is input lag a problem for you, I could never notice it when I had an a00

I did call the monitor department earlier today, they put me through to a different support and that department asked me to find out some info. This info I haven't got so I tried calling back and they put me to the OptiPlex department.

Right Dell has given me the runaround with the "No firmware update A02 for this model of monitor" which I know is bullcrap as this came from the OptiPlex area of the business. So I'm going to call back the monitor department and see what they can do.

Dell this is quite poor customer service .... anyone get any good direct numbers to the monitor support for this model?

Another update which is the awesome Dell support system as-it-is ..... they can't do anything unless I give them the business name the monitor was purchased under.

This monitor has been passed around a few times it seems so I don't know how to blag it past Dell support.

I don't mind paying for a firmware update but why is it so hard to do arrrgh!

Oh the joys of online auction site buying ;)

Anyone know any 3rd parties that could do this firmware update?

Input lag for FPS games mostly. I'm going to test it at home to see how much difference it is by cloning the desktop and running a stopwatch.

The benchmark is a Samsung 226BW.

Well let me know if the newer firmware does make a difference as i'm on the verge of selling my A00 revision for the same reason! Thanks.

Just got this from the place i got the monitor:

"Hi Daniel,

Thank you for your enquiry! The revision you speak of is a hardware revision and not a piece of software which can be updated. This is not something Dell cover under its warranty, so I am unfortunately unable to suggest a solution for you.

Kind regards,

Did some tests with input lag ..... the A00 revision is about 30ms or more behind the Samsung 226BW .... what are your opinions in the difference?

To me it doesn't seem that much but I do play quite a bit of Counter-Strike: Source but not competitively.

Well I've been playing call of duty for the last 3 years or so. It's only recently that I discovered how bad the input lag is by playing on a friends PC with a Samsung monitor. I couldn't believe how easy it was to point and shoot (on COD World at War 2). On my DELL you can never get a proper fix on a target due to the lag as the weapon site can't catch up with what the mouse is doing.

I've literally stopped playing COD now as I now know it's a waste of time. Still trying to decide how much to sell my DELL for and what monitor to get to replace it.....

Wow ... just an update .... after some persistent calling I managed to in touch with someone sensible at Dell monitors department.

They asked me to email the PayPal receipt and a photo of the serial number on the back of the monitor to transfer ownership, I did that last night.

Called them back today and they're replacing it tomorrow

I'm stoked that the monitor is still under warranty ... wow for the price I paid as a brand new A00 revision, I'm going probably going to get a refurbed A02 ;)
