is it worth the cash to upgrade from dell 24" goodness to the 30" ?

anyone done it ? your comments ?

worth the money ?

Hi there mate,

it really depends, what do you want from the screen? games , world processing, gfx work ????

until you tell us a bit more cant really help out.

but i just cant go back to something 24" after having 30", they are lovely screens, just a shame that they are not bigger screens at this resolution maybe something like 34-36 which would be ideal.

i have had no problem gaming on them, and the extra desk space is very handy.

buy new if you can dont be tempted with all these refurbished ones for £200 less, and DELL the customer service is great(well just the monitor guys in Scotland) but be prepared to go try a few of these before you get one that is acceptable.

good luck.

What res do you play games at AMDPower? I weas considering the same upgrade Paulus is talking bout, but running games at that res would be hungry!... right?

I've gone 15"->19"->20"->24"+20"->30"+20". There's no going back in any case. I'm currently running a 8800GTX, and you'll find the limits of the card with high settings in demanding games (just heap on 2560x1600 with 16xAA/AF), but if you're talking about buying such an expensive screen you shouldn't be averse to also buying a decent graphics card. That said, I may be overstating my case somewhat; I'm a real framerate junkie, and many games will run with everything up at a steady vsync'd 60fps.

I play some games in 1280x800, in which case the 3007WFP-HC is quite comparable to 32" 1366x768 screens. That's a lower resolution than a 17" 5:4 screen, and with some AA can look really good. Higher resolutions look better (and 2560 obviously eclipses all others).

I would not like a bigger screen at the same res as the pixels would have to be larger. I still use 4xAA on some games on this 30" samsung.
upto 36" by all means but the res will have to go up to keep the pixel size down.

Need to resurect this thread (got some extra cash in and thinking about this seriously now)

well i use my pc all of the time.. work, music, web, games, camera stuff. its a general all round pc that im at most of the time.

im worried that it will be too big for gaming, sitting so close to it.

and what do you mean "before i find one that is acceptable" ? were you sending them back. and why ?

any one else done this move 24 > 30 and have any comments ?

thank you

Hi there mate

Just before i answer some of your question just want to say everything is relative, what is good for one person is not for another.

now i read many times that the screen is too big and too this and text is small, but when i bought it was surprised how big is was at first (absolutely amazed actually considering i upgraded from a 19"crt that i was using as a temp monitor). But after about a week i got used to it and now it just seems normal, actually too normal. i sit about 20-24" away from the screen and text size is great.

as for gaming i cant say for 100% but i play far cry fine one an overclocked 7900gs @ max resolution and and get about 45-55fps which is quite enjoyable but although not maxed on everything. Play bf2 @ 1900x1600( i think) and it too is just perfect. Having said that farcry at lower resolution looks terrible, anything out of native is BAD in my eyes, but bf2 and oblivion seem just fine to me, although in native they do look slightly better so its game specific in my mind to a certain degree.

so its all relative, i would say with one gtx or gtx ultra you should be fine if you can accept lower resolution and gfx textures.

what i meant by finding one before its acceptable is that, usually these things do not come perfect from the manufacturer( so far my experience is only with dell 30") some have pink whites and other make buzzing noise on full brightness and other have blueish or yellowish whites, back light inconsistencies and so on..... so again it boils down to what is acceptable to you and how much leeway you have. For me if i way £1000 for a monitor i expect it to be perfect. I cant talk about other companies but Dell are very flexible with the guarantees and sending out new one if you find a fault with it, specially if you phone within 30 days of getting your new one, they are obliged to send out a replacement that is NEW after that you get refurbished ones as replacement.

if you can afford 30" i would say go for it, they are not as inflexible as you think and actually i wish i could get 34 lcd of the same resolution.

lovely screens, if you need pics i can take a few for you or any more questions do ask.

thank you for the reply.

i think im sold on this more and more..

i remember getting the 24" and thinking how big it was, and now that to me is normal, so i can imagine that the 30" will become normal very quickly.

if you have any pics, that would be great..
