Hi

Just wondering if anyone is using these drives, I've heard the advanced format 512e has a performance hit compared to a standard 4TB NLSAS, any opinions?

Was thinking of having 12 of them in RAID10 for a new backup server.

Thanks

Why would you RAID10 a backup server?

Hi

My other Veeam servers are 12 x 4TB, RAID6, they are working ok, but are too slow in transforming large (5TB+) jobs - It would be good to have the same size but RAID10.

I have asked the question if they are SMR or PMR.

RAID50 I like, the older disk arrays (MD1000) used to hold an odd number of disks, it was handy to have a RAID50 with a Hotspare, but going RAID50 on a 12 slot unit would mean having 2 spares and with the 2 drives that are already used for parity, I'd be losing 32TB of raw. Obviously RAID10 I'd lose loads more, but when you have parity issues on a massive volume it can be a killer to repair.

End of the day, it ain't my money - If they want quick restores and no chkdsk/parity horrors - then they should pay for RAID10.
