Dell laptop and auto left-clicking

I've recently bought a Dell Inspiron 1300 laptop with XP home edition SP2. It has a slightly annoying trait- the pointer device software sometimes left clicks on its own, as though to preempt a command. It's a bit of a nuisance and I'd like to know if I can disable it somehow. The pointer device is by Synaptics.

I've deduced after reading up a little that it seems to be my fault, I'm being clumsy and causing a click by tapping the pad. Takes a while to gain a good proficiency with a touchpad, but I'm getting there.
