I have an old Dell T110 motherboard and I'm trying to fit a new Arctic Alpine12 CPU cooler. I've realised that the 4 mounting points do not fit and also the 4 pin connector does not fit into the connector on the motherboard. I could potentially break the plastic surround on the motherboard connector and make it fit (??) then hold the cooler assembly in place with cable ties. Any advice ?

A 4 pin connector will go on a 3 pin header
Just the 4th pin overlaps the side and obviously isn't connected

Both connector and header are 4 pin. However the plastic shroud around the header on the motherboard is not the correct shape to allow the connector to be inserted. Looks like it would fit if I break the shroud a little - but no idea if the wiring would align.

Stop trying to mod an old server, even the best Xeon that thing can take gets beaten by a low end Ryzen.
Not only that, the cooler you are trying to fit is very low end and probably wont benefit you whatsoever.

The adapters you seek for the board connector are very cheap on an auction site or rainforest. But cable ties etc..? not worth the hassle, whats wrong with the original heatsink?
