Dell U3011 now or wait?

OCUK didn't get them in because they couldn't get any supplier to commit to an RMA policy. I followed the thread from start to finish (and bought one) and it was very clearly a case of price vs risk from the get go.

OKCUK were very generous in letting the thread stands as it clearly breaks the rules of the forum and they were actively posting as others were asking them to consider stocking them.

Fact is they couldn't get good enough answers on RMA so it wasn't worth their while taking the risk in terms of maybe wrecking their reputation as having pretty good customer service.

As for knowing which model to buy well that came down to several factors but what component doesn't? Essentially it came down to that fact that 2B Catleap models could be overclocked, to 120Hz in some cases and the other consideration was which bezel you thought least offensive :)

Early adopters were taking a huge risk but having followed it closely the customer service received by those who have had problems seems to have been very good to be honest. As an example Moogleys died after a week, he emailed and after a few back and forth emails was offered a refund which he was happy enough with. He then got a friend (LG tech as I recall) to have a look and he fixed the board, hazza working perfectly but the seller still gave him a $100 partial refund for the trouble.

I know it's never going to be the same level of service but they do seem to be making an effort to service problems, and why wouldn't they because they are selling them by the boatload! Time will tell though as who knows what will happen 6 months or a year down the line and that is exactly why the UK models, especially the Dell with it's wonderful warranty cost the extra. It's all down to personal choice. If I could have afforded the Dell I would have got it but I couldn't so took the chance and SO FAR it has paid off.

yer well put ive been in and out of that thread moogleys in the end paid of

i agree they should support the duff ones for the time as they are still making grand sales. hope thye still do when the initial fervor is over i cant imagine in 12 months time the service level will be the same

i would guess the sellers are following the threads and weighing up the +/- benefits of the refunds etc that would be the sensible thing to do then work out the point at which sales vs returns makes it unviable to be as helpfull

i may be being a little to judgemental for want of a better word but time will tell..

as i have said before i really hope the buyers do get good service and a long life span thats a win win situation when considering the price

there is no doubtting the value aspect

i personally put more value in the extras and build quality of the dell

fingers xssd for good results for everyone who bought one i just didnt want to go that route.

i will follow the thread with interest tho

I am thinking along the same lines in terms of longer term support, which is likely to drop off but I took the risk and if it lasts me 18-24 months I will consider it money well spent given the price. And like I said there is no denying the extras that you get with the Dell, if you can afford it is definitely worth the money. I loved my Dell 24" which served me very well for 3 years and continues to do so don't have a bad word to say about them to be honest.

I got a PCBANK one mainly because it was cheapish at the time and I got a decent deal on the so called 'pixel perfect' nonsense model which we all know is a load of bull but it did give me course to return it if I wasn't happy (edit. Oh and Moogleys had got one from the same seller and at the time it was working great and had good reports). My main considerations were the stand, which like I said is actually quite good in terms of stability and I actually don't mind the bezel (it looks a lot like a mid range Samsung TV which aren't exactly ugly). I wasn't into the whole 120Hz thing so that was a non issue for me.

In terms of my thoughts I have compared it with the 23", 24" and 27" Dell IPS screens (in the flesh as my mate has a 23" and 27" and we have 24"'s at work) and to be honest it is pretty much on a par. The only gripes aren't really with the panel but with the lack of an OSD which means tweaking the settings via software. It's not perfect but given enough patience I have got an excellent picture (mainly used for general PC usage and gaming, I watch TV and movies on my HDTV).

Obviously I have been lucky in the sense that I got one with no dead/stuck pixels (so far) but for what I paid versus what I could have got in the UK for the money it's night and day. Would I have bought it if I could have comfortably afforded the Dell? Probably not but I guess that's why the thread is SO long right now :)

yup thats a fair doos statement tbh can see the attraction of them

for me it was one or other and if it was one i had to be sure ....

You have put me in a dilemma now lol. I prefer the Dell but these Korean panels are just so cheap. Guess my biggest fear would be having to pay customs charge on top of the cost.

DELL as no1 choice always even the owners of the others will tell u that tbh

I paid £13 in customs duty all in. But as the conversation goes, who knows how long mine will last. (edit. that is the same with the Dell but the difference there is that who CARES with the Dell as you know it will be replaced next day. Mine will be replaced for the time being but in 8-12 months who knows I might just have to suck it up and accept you maybe do get what you pay for).

yer but fingers xssed if it does 2 years bargain 3 = bonus

very much so I would be thinking 1 year = ahh well not too great but worth a bash, 2 years = can't complain and 3+ years = BONUS :) Guess it is getting to that 1 year mark without issues that will be interesting :) I'm sure that the thread will be an interesting and ongoing one regardless of the outcome. (and for anyone from OCUK who may see this, it's why people on here buy from you as it breaks the rules but deemed worthwhile to the community so thanks :) )

yer +1

It's a shame they're still £950 here on ocuk. I've just bought one from elsewhere for over £100 less. A budget is a budget and a saving is a saving.

To the OP, I don't think you'd be disappointed with a 30". So looking forward to when mines arrives :D. Games are going to be mahoossive and working with the extra desktop space will be such a pleasure. It's odd, already having a 24" (mva or pa panel I think, defo not tn) you get used to the space and grow out of it, wanting more. The fact that my work laptop can run the max resolution via display port is a great bonus, I was worried it wouldn't cope.

The alternative 27" 2560x1440 monitors look a little too wide, or height restrictive, I don't know what it is about them if you know what I mean. But that's the 16:9 trend that's here to stay I reckon. I digress, go 30"!

Hmmm I'm still hovering over the buy button. I'm thinking now that maybe the 30" might be just a bit big and looking at the u2711. Also the saving of £300 or so would be nice. Are both the dells plus the catleap matt finish displays? And how would an IPS display compare to my current display which I think is AMVA? Cheers for all the input guys it really is appreciated :)

If you can afford the 30" then go for it. The 27" is great but you'll regret not going for the 30" if it was an option. All your PC time is spent in front of the screen so you should buy the best you can afford.

Both the Dells have a matt finish. I'm not sure about the Catleaps. I'm sure someone has mentioned it within the 50+ pages of the catleap thread :D

My 2711 was losing white and turning a bit yellow after 2 years.

1. Call dell, 10m call
2. Replacement send from dell next day
3. Broken one picked up day after the replacement arives

Within 24 hrs they send me a brand new monitor.

This alone is enough to recommend beside the awsome quality

Fact is they couldn't get good enough answers on RMA so it wasn't worth their while taking the risk in terms of maybe wrecking their reputation as having pretty good customer service.

Yet the Hazros are still stocked despite the dodgy QA and frustratingly slow RMAs. They have had my monitor (glass falling out + only half screen working) for four weeks now! I wish I had just gone with a Dell.

OP, if the price isn't a problem I'd definitely go with the 30, more screen res is always better :)
