Hi all,

So I am going to be buying a whole new gaming rig that I am going pretty much full out on and plan to run at least two monitors, possibly three.

I am going to be playing lots of games and watching lots of films and TV etc on the PC so the monitors need to fill these purposes. I have been seeing good things about the Dells, how is this one and does anyone have any first hand experiences doing the things I mentioned above on it?

My concerns with this one are as follows:

1920x1080 - I know that this is as good as it gets for console gaming and movies etc but given that I am going all out on the PC I could be playing games at a much higher res.

8ms response time - Seems a little high to me? Will I be noticing much ghosting when playing fast paced fps games and the like?

23" - It is always nice to have a big screen, there are a few other models like the Iiyamas that go up to 27", would that combined with the higher res be better for gaming?

For budget I have probably around £5-600 (It is all part of the 2K for the whole rig) for the two monitors but could always stretch a little further if it got me significantly more monitor for my money.

So I would very much like to hear what everyone thinks of the monitor scene at the moment.

Thanks!

Went from a Dell (trinitron) 19" CRT to this monitor and it isn't the best changes as far as response goes (and talking about FPS games), but the screen is never the less fantastic; every time I get on my computer I am amazed and I had it for a good couple of month now (daily usage as well)

You said it isnt great for FPS games - is the lag very noticable? I'm looking at getting this to replace my 4 year old LG 204wt. I like playing games, FPS games like Bad Company 2. Is there a another Dell which is suited to games better?

It depends what you're comparing it to, Shuffle. The responsiveness of the U2311H, if placed beside a CRT or 120Hz LCD, is generally a little lacklustre. The U2311H does, however, put in a comparable performance to pretty much every current monitor at or below its retail price. The input lag is nice and low (so the monitor 'feels' responsive to your input) whilst trailing is generally less noticeable than monitors which should, according to specification, be 'faster. This is partly due to a combination of misleading or unrepresentitive figures and also that the pixel overdrive algorithms have been implemented nicely by Dell. I think the experience should be similar (if not better in some respects) to your current LG. Nobody is going to be able to tell you that 'you won't notice trailing' or it won't be a problem for you, but the same goes for pretty much every LCD monitor. The experience is subjective and no words of wisedom can compare to using the product first hand.

Thank you for your reply PCM2 - I have read your informative and valuable input regarding monitors on this forum. Would you go for this monitor if u had to choose one now, for gaming, or should I go for another LG? Perhaps I should just go the 120hz route. I want to spend upwards £250.

I don't think there is anywhere near a 'perfect solution' at the moment and there will always be compromises along the way. Personally speaking I do find the U2311H provides a good and (for the price) pretty unique gaming experience. The feedback from other users would seem to agree with this. I think for 120Hz to be a worthwhile investment you would need to think whether it is worth sacrificing a bit in the way of image quality for very high potential responsiveness. I say potential because it very much depends on the framerate your system can pump out on a particular title at the settings you want to use. If you prefer to crank up the graphics and you don't have a huge amount of computing horsepower I would avoid this route.

I have a Dell U2311H which I use for FPS gaming and it is great, coming from a 2ms Samsung TN panel, I don't notice any trailing or ghosting with the Dell, the response time is fine while the image quality is fantastic.
