Dell XPS 720 for BF3, what card?

Get the 6850. Your CPU will bottleneck anything more powerful - meaning a waste of money.

The 6850 will still be bottlenecked at times, but less so than the 7850 for example.

I'd rather not get a direct replacement for my 8800GTX and would like something that can cope with BF3 better. My 8800 used to get really hot when playing BF3 on medium/high settings which in the end is what I think killed the card. Therefore something quiet and that will stay cool would be good.

Looking at the BF3 benchmark here a card that jumps out at me is the GTX580. It seems to be much better than the AMD cards at lower resolutions and even pretty decent at higher res despite only having 1.5gb of VRAM.

Overclockers have a Gainward GTX580 OEM for £239 at the moment. Would this card be suitable as it's just within budget? If I decide to change my PC over the next year to reduce bottlenecking then it also gives me the option to keep the card rather than having to buy another card and in SLI on a better machine I am sure it would fly on BF3

Thoughts?

A gtx 580 will be a waste of money mate.

You say you play a lot of BF3?

I was on a core 2 quad @ 3.6 compared to your 2.6 with a 5870 (a bit faster than 6850) or about twice as fast as your current card.

In BF3 multi player, the majority of the time the GPU would be utilized to about 60% (in a busy scene) and maybe 100% on the edge of the map, looking out away from the map.

So you may buy an expensive and powerful GPU, but you will find most of the time it is not being properly used, and you wont see the high framerates that you have paid for.

I hear what your saying Flinco but I just wonder if I upgrade my monitor to 1920x1200 then is game going to be unplayable on a 6850? For £60 extra I could get the VTX 7850. Not sure if this will help on a high res monitor or the bottleneck will still mean the game will be unplayable

It's a shame you can't OC your CPU as this would help give a needed boost. Deffo 7850 is the way to go as later on, I am sure you will upgrade your MOBO and CPU (real easy to do and any help needed, many guys here to advise) . This way you will allow for the full potential of the 7850.

OK lets assume I will upgrade the CPU and MOBO in the next 6-12 months assuming that can be done on the XPS. Knowing dell they will have done something on the cheap so I can't change the motherboard.

So if I do upgrade shall I go for one of these VFX 7850's on offer at £169. The price seems good, not sure how good VFX are in terms of noise and heat?

A good price TBH but may pay to google some reviews on that specific model. Noise maybe a factor as it is a reference card but I am just guessing.

i had that dell xps and so dose a friend of mine.. i tried to change the mobo as i thought the case was alright tbh.. have fun trying to get it out and getting a new one in.. you will damage the new mobo before you get it into the case!

The hardest part for you is bottlenecking. A 560ti will be fine though but ultra will prove too much for it.

YOUR BASKET
1 x Asus GeForce GTX 560Ti DirectCU II TOP 2048MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card £199.99
Total : £210.79 (includes shipping : £9.00).

or for future proofing a little more (needs an K processor to get the full benefit)

YOUR BASKET
1 x Sapphire HD 7850 2048MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card £199.99
Total : £210.79 (includes shipping : £9.00).

You can OC your Quad quite easily with a good heatsink. This will give your new GPU a good boost :)

Also what PSU make and model bud please.

Update for OP:

The prices of these cards have now changed. The First one is now £210 and the second £190. Definitely go for the latter.

If you didn't know, the XPS 700-720 PC's are a Dell only form factor. The mobo was BTX, that would be why a new board wouldn't fit. When I owned one I think I heard about someone doing a conversion, but without any modifications an ATX board won't fit or work in the XPS 700-720 cases

Hi all

Continuing to read reviews etc and really liking the 7850 for it's size, power consumption, noise etc compared to the GTX cards. Also they seem to represent good value for money and would be future proof for any new system.

However, while looking on overclockers I noticed a deal on the Sapphire 7870 at £239 which is in budget. Would it be worth me spending the extra £50 and getting one of these?

If it is in your budget bud, go for it :)
