Derby fire deaths: Parents arrested on suspicion of murder

I just watched that kyle clip, Is that presenter always like that ? Shocking.

Gutted about the 6 kiddys dying, Whoever is responsible needs some serious punishment.

I'm only surprised there aren't more people on here that had a sneaky suspicion they'd did it from day one.

As soon as I saw the press conference I thought they knew something about it. Reminded me of the Shannon Matthews press conferences.

they arrested the mccanns didnt they? doesnt really mean much at the end of the day.

Were the McCanns actually arrested? I know they were made prime suspects (el guido or whatever it was called) but don't they were actually arrested.

The Philpotts haven't been arrested just so they can be questioned (as sometimes happens when people don't volunteer) they have been arrested on suspicion of murder. Whilst until a jury convicts them we should assume innocence the coppers don't usually arrest on murder unless they have some pretty decent evidence.

I believe Kate and Jerry McCann were indeed placed under arrest by the Spanish police so that they could be formally interviewed. They were later de-arrested. It's standard procedure.

They've been arrested, not charged. Big difference.

Yeah...in Portugal.

You don't need to be arrested to be interviewed by the police in the UK.

Besides the McCann's weren't arrested and were interviewed formally numerous times by the Portuguese authorties. Try putting "McCanns arrested" into Google and you get nothing back on their case. Or just read the Wiki article...

McCanns as suspects
The Polícia Judiciária (PJ), on 6 September, officially interviewed Kate for a second time, at the police station in Portimão with the McCanns' Portuguese lawyer, Carlos Pinto de Abreu, present. The family’s spokeswoman Justine McGuinness said, "Kate will answer every question put to her – she has nothing to hide."[65] Pinto de Abreu made a formal application for the couple’s status to be changed from 'witness' to 'assistant' in the investigation. This is a technical move which would allow the McCanns to have more information about the progress of the investigation.[65] When Pinto de Abreu emerged with Kate from the police station in the early hours of 7 September, after more than 10 hours of questioning, he said Kate "was interviewed as a witness and she still remains a witness. The investigation is ongoing and we cannot say any more."[65]
Kate returned for further interview later on 7 September and was formally declared a suspect by the Portuguese police.[66] During this interview Kate used her right to remain silent.[67] After questioning, Kate was released from the police station just before 16:00 without being charged.[9] Gerry was interviewed at the same police station during the afternoon and evening of 7 September and afterwards Pinto de Abreu announced that Gerry had also been named as a formal suspect.[9][10] Before she became a suspect Kate said "The police don't want a murder in Portugal and all the publicity about them not having paedophile laws here, so they're blaming us," and Gerry said "We are being absolutely stitched up."[68] Pinto de Abreu said that claims by relatives that police had offered Kate a plea bargain if she admitted to accidentally killing her child were wrong and the result of "a misunderstanding".[69]

The UK Foreign Office is providing the McCanns with assistance.[70] Home Secretary Jacqui Smith said on 9 September "I am clear that the Portuguese police have the objective of solving this crime, and most importantly finding Madeleine, and that is what we in our support of the McCanns have tried to do as well."[71] The McCanns flew home on 9 September via Faro and East Midlands airports.[12]

They were made prime suspects but never arrested (unless you count house arrest), you need a decent amount of evidence to arrest.

Hmmm... fair enough.

I seem to remember a bit of a hoo-haa about it though when news of their actual arrest was out and their lawyer was quick to say that it was only so they could be properly questioned.

Mind you, Spanish vs. Portuguese... I don't pay a whole lot of attention to these things, do I? :D

Carry on. :D

From the wording it looks like they've been arrested so other witnesses can come forward without the fear of intimidation. At least that's how I read it.

I'm not sure people are understanding what being arrested on suspicion of murder means. You can't just arrest people for nothing or tactically just to try and get other people to come forward.

You can only arrest someone if you have some convincing evidence to do so, it would have also been authorized at a high level.

Again, we should presume innocence and Pestilence is right to state they haven't been charged yet. But let's stop pretending that arresting someone on suspicion of murder is taken lightly by the Police.

The police officer in charge of the investigation has just been on TV saying he doesn't know the reason for the arson attack.

I'll leave you with these three words and await the flak...

Proposed Benefits Cap.

Two people were arrested on sus****ion of murder just after the fire. Released without charge.

Of course it's not taken lighty but being arrested is not always equal to guilt.

So they allegedly killed their own six kids because they wouldn't get benefits for them? You trollin'?

You got another reason? It's not the fact they won't get the benefit it's that they'd be financially crippled. It's probably not the reason but it's surprising sometimes how money can affect people.

If it really was them it makes that video of them talking to the press pretty sickening.
