Does anyone know where I can find stuff like silica gel (like you get in shoe boxes) or something similar from a highstreet shop? Would a DIY shop sell it?

Could diatomaceous earth work for your dessication problem? It's very cheap and is available at most hardware or auto-parts stores.

Some photography shops sell re-usable bags to protect camera equipment, probably not the cheapest option though.

Buy a disposable nappy, tear it open and get the material (sodium polyacrylate) out of that, it absorbs loadsa water
