Howdy, spoke to the guy who did my Ceramic coating and he's given me some info just because I asked basically when he was on about the paint on an MX5 he's recently done... just thought I'd share for those who may be interested.

So my question was... How thick is paint on cars, I assume is varies vastly and especially on modern cars compared to older cars...

"It varies mate. Newer cars are definitely running much thinner. Aluminium cars don't have a galv layer so they show a bit thinner bit in actual fact are not. I'll try and do a post sometime about paint depths but for example the 306 I just worked on was around 150micron average. A piece of masking tape on the bodywork and take a reading it's 250 total. That means the thickness of a piece of masking tape is roughly 100 microns.

The 150 will be about 10-15micron galv (I think), 25% primer, 25% base colour and 50% lacquer (modern cars I believe are more like 1/3rd for each layer).
50% of 150 is 75microns and we can't expend all or even most of that. so let's say 30 microns is a HEAVY cut.

A piece of masking tape is 100 microns thick.......I've got about 1/3rd of the thickness of a piece of masking tape max to work with.

Some Japanese cars are but I've always found it hit and miss. Solid black is a bitch from any manufacturer but Japanese solid black
