None of them have a storyline like say Lost - if you want that I'd probably say try Battlestar Galactica (first one that comes to mind that had a strong running storyline).
Breaking Bad is the 'strongest' story I guess, since the whole show is essentially one main thread. Dexter tends to have a bit of a reset between each season, but within each one is a full story. Justified starts out as single-episode stories, but it grows out of it in the second season.
Depending how far your pennies can stretch, maybe the X-Files. That will keep you going for a while. Agreed, the writing isn't the same style as the things mentioned above, but I think it's worth a watch
Scrap all of those excellent shows and put them on the back burner and get The Wire. Justified, Breaking Bad and Dexter are amazing but The Wire is on another level completely. I also like the Good Wife - another good show with quite a few appearances by Michael J Fox who steals the show whenever he is in it.
Watched the 1st episode of Dexter and loved it. Bought the series on Itunes.
Watched the second episode and i'm already at the meh stage.
I like the fact it has some comedy scenes but the first episode had some laughs but ep. 2 didn't have any really. I can't say more without spoilers so here they are. Hope someone doesn't see them accidentally :S
Ok the killer left something in his house (twice) yet he is supposed to be a fantastic planner so how did the guy get in? Also at the end of EPp 2. he is cooking and when he turns round the dolls head is again on his fridge door. His fridge faces his front door how did he not see it before?
He takes his victims to deserted places but the whole disposal of body etc isn't explained. Yet he keeps going on about how he won't get caught but doesn't go into detail as to why? Guess I'm looking for a deeper kind of show?
Breaking Bad - Immense tension, slow burner though.
Justified - classy writing and drama
Dexter - ups and downs, latest season was the worst season of television i've watched in a long time.

Think this proves they are all a great watch. Watched the first episode of breaking bad and it seemed intresting, might break it up abit with juatified, dexter sounds abit hit and miss so ill save that for when ive burned out on these, might even watch the wire before dexter. Weirdly enough my mate just rang today and said he has the xfes to watch if i fancied it but it doesnt sound like my cup of tea, im not into the alien stuff.
