Hi all

My GF's dad has a router in an up stairs bedroom(front) (DG834GT - Netgear) but the signal does not reach that far and wants the signal to get to the back of the house , he has a few laptops one HP with built in wireless and another with pcmcia card is there anyway of setting up one of the laptops to act as a repeter? or boost the signal to the back of the house? just for internet use?

Thanks

Think you can buy a high gain aerial for the 834 but if you want to try something a little different you could make a Windsurfer Parabolic Reflector which will boost the signal in a direction you want

one i made below

Hiya,

The router already has a diffrent aerial to the default one.

We have one of the laptops ad the edge of the wireless range and trying Ad-Hoc the other laptop can see the ad-hoc but the one that is sending out the ad-hoc has no internet connection.. so it isnt connecting

Have you tried re-positioning the router and changing channel number of the WiFi to see if that improves the signal strength?

The signal strength this router gives off is not good at all tbh, ive got one and the PC in the kitchen gets a poor signal and the router is only in my room, and this is just a 2 bedroom bungalow!!

Same with me. The DG834GT doesn't give off a great signal. I actually went back to the standard O2 Wireless Box II and the wireless signal is better.

Still it's reliable, have had one loss of sync not sure the cause but afaik the router hasn't crashed at all for about 18 months since I've lived here. It is not as fast as my old US Robotics Ethernet only one that ran Linux but its fast enough as I sync at 8128kbit and I live in the sticks, lucky this parish has its own phone exchange.
