Hi, currently waiting for Tiscali to set me up with Broadband, but in the meantime have been using BT dial up. Working fine until last night, when it suddenly began refusing to connect giving an Error 280 - No dial tone. It worked fine that am and nothing had changed. I've reinstalled the dialler software and the modem drivers and also tried re-installing the modem in another PCI slot in case that helped. I've tried plugging the modem directly into the wall phone connection point in case my extension was making a difference but still came up with nothing. I've tried dialling up and then picking the phone up and I can hear the modem trying to connect but the dial tone still continuing in the backgroud, so the modem appears to be working properly.

I've tried the rubbish help that comes with BT and the tips they give (make sure 1571 has no messages, try the 'quiet line' test etc but still nothing. The only technical help desk I can call costs 50p a min with I refuse to pay, as I'm already paying a flat rate for 150 hrs access (hey it's only a quid for the first month but the principle's there).

It's only a temporary solution but I'd still like to be able to dial up. Does anyone have any suggestions please?

Cheers for any help.

Are you sure you line hasn't been broadband enabled and they just haven't told you? Do you have an adsl splitter that you could try to see if that makes a difference?

Yeah I thought that but a) when I check my order status with Tiscali it says 'Engineers are checking the status of your line at the exchange'. And b) I called up the Tiscali technical support help desk to ask if they'd done anything and the Sri-Lankan/Indian guy in the call centre said not.

Not impressed with Tiscali's speed of service though
