Just recieved the zotac nvidia geforce gtx 1060 from OC.
plugged it in and fired the PC up...

nothing... monitor getting no signal.
card appears powerd up ... fan running .

Put old card back in .... Im here typing ... so the Mobo is functional.

My mobo meets all the requirements as specified on the box.
PCI Express compliant .. check
1 dual width x16 slot .. check
6 pin power supply .. check
350 mb HD space .. 100's of gb free
4gb ram .. system has 16gb
Windows 7 64 OS .. check

My mobo is getting old but still works fine.
Its a Asus p5q3 deluxe running an Intel core2 Quad Q9550 (Yorkfield) CPU

Have I missed something ... Have I bought a incompatable GFX card?

Advice please ...

power it up again, remove display cable to plug back in again whilst its all on. have this all the time haha

might need to look if there's a bios update for your motherboard. Sometimes newer cards don't play nice with older motherboards, but often an updated bios will sort it.

Your C2Q CPU, even if you get the card to work, will horribly horribly bottleneck that card. It's a waste of money really. You'll never get anywhere near full performance. Also it's likely that the card is incompatible with your old board. You really need a full system upgrade.

Your CPU is 2006 technology dude. It's time to upgrade.

IIRC I got about 30% more performance from GTX470 SLI (with a hefty OC) going from Q9550 @ 4GHz to a i7 4820K at stock (3.9GHz single thread) - so anything newer than about a GTX680 is going to be held back quite a bit.

orbitalwalsh - was so hoping you were right ... sadly .. no . :( .. did not work.
To the rest of you, yes ... I realise that I might be flogging a dead horse .. and its time to upgrade the entire system ...
The sad thing is ... because I have misread the indications ... I have ended up destroying my gtx titan ... yes titan!!
dont ask how ... im so gutted ... the titan was a gift.
The zotac was a comprimise replacement ( budget) whilst I figured out the best way forward ...
As with most folk ... pennies ... are hard to come by ....

Ill look at the bios ... see if theres a tweak that will get it running for now ... this card that im using here is an old ATI HD 4800
which is shot ... cant use it for any acceleration .. but Ok for ordinary desktop stuff ... a little shimmery though.

Thanks for your ideas ... Ill get back after the bios tweak ...
just dont have the pennies to rush out for a full upgrade just now ...

What bios version is your motherboard running? If you download CPU-z it will tell you the current version by clicking on the Mainboard tab. The latest version is 2105 but that was from back in July 2009 so even that may not fix things. If you are running a older bios you can download 2105 from here. If I remember right EZ-Flash was still in the bios under the tools tab back then so put the new bios on a usb stick and plug it into the pc. Reboot and enter the bios and go to the tools tab. Select EZ-Flash and follow the instructions to flash the bios. Do not flash the bios using any windows software, especially from back then. If you are overclocked write your settings down before flashing as it will reset the bios and you will need to re-enter them again afterwards.

ver 2105 ( H:02 B:38 ) is what was in ... I reinstalled it just in case.
I've never overclocked anything ... dont like the idea of it to be honest ...

Anyway Im feeling that an upgrade is going to have to happen ... so

what if I keep the zotac nvidia geforce gtx 1060>
and get a new Mobo and cpu

The heaviest game/sim I play is DCS world ... wow and eve online ...

What would match up well with the zotac ... price £100 for mobo and £200 for cpu ( £300 max for both ) to give me good dcs perfomance ...
which still tends to be CPU intensive ..

I have a good power supply, 16g ddr3 Ram, and a new ssd. The CPU cooler is good too.
Is the Asus P8Z68-V / Gen3 Mobo worth looking at ? I can get one new @ £150 ? if so what CPU to go with it?

Why are you looking at overpriced brand new motherboards that are several years old? Forget that idea and get a up to date AMD Ryzen build for which you will also need new DDR4. Nothing up to date uses DDR3 anymore. What make and model is your psu and how old is it?

Only 8Gb or memory (you need 3000mhz or more to get the best out of Ryzen) but a 4 core/8 thread cpu.

My basket at Overclockers UK:

Total: £361.47
(includes shipping: £10.50)

Even better 6 core 12 thread cpu and 16 Gb of memory

My basket at Overclockers UK:

Total: £460.47
(includes shipping: £10.50)

Both cpu's come with AMD's very capable Wraith cooler.

as above but even more stripped down for cost, 4 core 4 thread ryzen, matx Gaming 3 version and 8GB ram and still would be flying to your current core setup

My basket at Overclockers UK:

Total: £287.43
(includes shipping: £10.50)
