Size doesn't really bother me, need something economical. Would prefer something with aircon but at this price I think I may struggle. Looked at a few 306 DTurbos but they seem to be in terrible condition at this price, or perhaps I've just looked at the lemons. Needs to be capable of atleast 40-45mpg+ and carry 4 adults.

Any further suggestions?

Xsara HDI /306/406/that old school citreon, agh, bx?zx? whatever it was they look horrific but good mpg and kit for the money.

I have seen quite a few Mk2 Mondeo Ghia X TD for under £1500.

The diesel engine in them is nothing special though, also the TD Ghia X do not have a trip computer or cruise control. You do get air con though.

I do, at most 10k a year. So the difference between a 30mpg (2.0 Mondeo Petrol) car and 45mpg car isnt actually that much. Espescially as diesel is more expensive around here.

I'm going to say 406 Executive here, has to be the best cheapo diesel car.

Mondeo diesel engine is garbage, sorry but it is.

406 Executive Td, only one in my price range on Autotrader and that is nearly 200 miles away, hence seem rather rare - next spec level down perhaps?

Xsaras generally seem to be at the upper end of the budget for very low spec cars.

ZX, wheres the : puke: smiley? :D I know I'm on a tight budget but I wouldnt have one its just so vile.

Xantia's I get the impression they are mostly very tired now, don't ever see any Xantia minicabs anymore?

Anything Omega size for this kind of cash?

Sure can:) I dont know how common they are though. Do remember however that even the CD's have a good spec, electric all round, heated (front) seats, dual zone air con, electric sunroof's etc.

Above CD you then have CDX too, which has everything elite has pretty much (so obviously jumps up to leather std, dual zone digital climate rather than air con etc), except maybe heated rear seats and the electric blinds etc So not that important to get an elite.

Omega 2.5 TD is the BMW unit so should be pretty strong. They are extremely rare in Elite trim though - as Jez says, others are fine. Personally I'd be happy with a GLS for £1500. Condition over spec.

I'd also agree with 406 TD and Xantia TD. 406 if you're a driver, Xantia if you want something a little more quirky with fantastic ride quality.

Not driven many cars of late, but i've been loving the running around in the wifes 406dt today, VERY nice car to drive, almost considered keeping it and flogging the van  Only an LX, but it still shiney inside :D

Thing with the Omega is the £1500 quid purchase price is like a deposit, you pay many times more keeping the damn thing working :(

Perhaps true of the V6s and perhaps the automatic gearboxes but with a 2.5TD manual it shouldn't be too bad?
