Differences?

Hi

What are the differences between the following?

X48 chipset
X38 chipset
P31 chipset
P35 chipset
nforce 7 chipset
nforce6 chipset

I have never talken that much notice of Intel CPU chipsets, always been a AMD man, until now. Wanna upgrade my 3800 X2

i wana know too!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! cuase i wana know hat i'm missing out buying a p31 gigabyte mobo instead of a p35

I know part of it is the max speed of the RAM, but any other differences?

Intel P35 has support for more stuff than p31. Faster Ram speed and DDR3 ram aswell. Accoring to their chipset diagram p31 oly supports Dual Core not Quad Core, but i don't know how true this is. I think P31 only gets shipped with ICH7 southbridge which has less USB ports, less RAID options etc.

The X38 is like p35 with more pci-express lanes. Enough for 2 x16. Also has faster RAM speed.

Nforce 6 & 7 are Nvidia chipsets which support SLI. AFAIK there the only chipsets supporting SLI at the moment.

P35 is the best to get if you not going to go SLi/Crossfire?

P35 is the best all rounder at the moment. If you want Crossfire you can get P35 with two pci e slots but they run at 8x speed when both in use IIRC.

If you want SLI you have to go Nforce. Nforce 650 is a good budget SLI option.

does any chipset have a better O/C than others? or is it down to the individual models within each chipset range?

I know the P35 boards tend to overclock quad cores better than Nforce and i think the X38 clocks slightly better than P35. Not really an expert on ocing i'm afraid. I only clock to the highest i can get on stock volts.

With the P35, if you run xfire you will run at 16x and 4x. I am waiting on the 3870 x2 tbh and give that a go.

wow i never knew p35 that much more stoof 0.0 but i dont need no more usb prots than the p31 supplies, and ddr3 + raid is for ppl that has gold leaking from thier arm pits.
