Disappointment with Ryzen and Bios

So just finished building my nice new shiney ryzen build in a micro atx case. Spent hours cramming it all in and sorting cable management to boot up and it just go Into a boot cycle with no video output at all. Phoned OCUK to be told it's the boards bios not supporting ryzen 5 only 7.... surely OCUK should put two and two together when buying a board and cpu? Really annoyed that I now need to take it all apart and send the board back to have a bios update done then sent back. What a pain in the backside. So far ryzen.... tbh thinking of just sending it all back and going Intel after spending a fortune on ddr4 for ryzen and being so limited by am4 coolers. Yes I'M ranting but seriously what a poor launch of a product.

Just spoken to them again and now they are thinking it's the ram not being supported as it's 3200mhz and if it's an old bios it won't work?

So I have just placed a cheeky prime now order to get a ryzen 7 and some 2400mhz ddr4 delivered this eve to try. If that works will update the bios then have 14 days too return the ryzen 7. I guess I might fall in love with the 7 and return the 5 let's see

unless the xmp profile is run isn't all ddr4 2133mhz ??
Looking at the supported ram there is only 1 3200 kit supported "out the box" so I'm guessing this has to be the problem. Taking the ram out I get exactly the same boot cycle so it's as if there is no ram installed

Can i make a suggestion as you are getting no graphics output ? Remove your 980ti and connect your screen to the onboard HDMI port. If the mobo then boots to the bios with graphics output working you can then disable the onboard graphics and reinstall your 980ti.

Just tried it and getting same boot on off situation. Without a gpu installed. Ryzen has no on-board you anyway?

:D no worries. I id try the HDMI on the board any way to to "check" all aptions but i cant get around this power cycling. It runs for 20 seconds then i hear a "click" from the PSU and it rebooting again. There is a slim chance its a dead PSU but unlikely i would imagine. having had a look around online its really looking like the RAM not being supported by the bios. shame you cant post to bios without ram. The ram will be here between 8-10pm (got to love amazon prime now) as will a ryzen 7. will give the ram a go first and if it works update the bios and see what goes on. DOnt want to take the 1700 out the pack as i know im going to be temped to keep it and i really did not want to spend that much on a HTPC rig for the living room.

also just noticed the Ryzen 7 1700 is only 65w and the 1600X is 95w how does adding the X add so many more watts?

It stands for thermal design power. It's loosely useful for specing cooling requirements. The higher measure reflects the X variants higher XFR boost ability. Boosting the clockspeed with higher voltage draws more power so produces more heat.

I understand TDP but they advertise it as Watts so i was assuming that it actually draws 95 watts and 65 watts respectively. Just thought that ever the XRF feature of the 6 core would not use that much more over a "stock non XFR" 8 core. Not arguing the fact just quite surprised that a 8 core 16 thread is that much lower thats all. looking forward to just getting it going now see what this Ryzen fuss is all about. It will be used for some Sony Vegas work (sorry just Vegas now) so it should really shine here. i guess as more and more games are written for multi core CPU's this will help do.
Im surprised that they are not more games supporting multi threaded CPU's given the PS4 have 4 cores and the new Xbox one X has 8 cores now. I guess the launch of that console might really help multi core support in games.

Well both sets of ram it just keeps looping its boot and both CPU's it keeps looping its boot. tried all combinations with no joy and i just cleared the CMOS. its either the PSU or the MOBO it has to be. Think i will return both the MOBO and the PSU and get them to check both and replace the faulty one. So frustrating. Cant help but think i should have gone intel. Never had an issue on intel boads and i have to say AMD boards look so cheap compared to the intel counter part.

It is sammy B-die indeed Just hope the faulty board has killed anything else. I have to be honest never heard a PSU click the way this does on restart.

getting absolutely no video output at all

Have you tried one RAM stick at a time? Unlikely to be the CPU of you have tried 2 unless you're very unlucky.

PSU or mobo sound like possible culprits.
Yep tried all 4 ram sticks as just one stick. Still nothing. Just stripped it all down going to call ocuk tomorrow see what they have to say. Ideally I think I will return the mobo and psu. Might ask if I can just return both and buy new ones so I'm not waiting a week or so without a machine.

Do you have a BIOS/boot/POST speaker connected, to hear what POST beep you are getting for errors? Also I assume you have used just one stick of RAM in all of the slots one at a time?

How are the 24 pin and 8 Power connectors looking? Do they fit snugly, not at weird angles?

Unfortunately no Speaker attached and i dont have one to try. Yes to the ram question, The connectors are all fine i even just took the whole thing apart and rebuilt it just in case there was a loose wire but im a bit of a cable freak and everything has to be super neat and 100% Although i have to say building in a node 202 case is a bit of a nightmare.

Yes Amigafan i tend to agree im going to go with Power. But im sending it all back as im not playing yoyo for weeks. Also have to now return the 1700 and the corsair ram. At least i never got to see the 1700 working so it never tempted me.

NEver had to return anything really before to OCUK are they pretty good as taking stuff back?

Some poor advice from tech support.

Ryzen 5 supported from the release bios (this board launched more recently than most) and RAM should default to 2133mhz if it doesn't work.

Original rant about Ryzen also doesn't seem to be valid anymore.

Will agree with the original rant no longer being Valid haha. I really dont want to be without a system over the weekend and like an idiot i have given my old HTPC away thinking this will be running by the weekend. Hoping they will take both back and just refund me when they get it. I guess i could always ask them to take it back under the 14 day online thing if not. But i dont want the items going back into stock for some other poor sod to end up with them.

Ok so OCUK have been as good as gold. Explained the whole situation and they are refunding the board and mobo for me to send back and a new one will be here tomorrow.

IT LIVES !!!! new mobo and psu fitted and it fired up straight away. Windows is installing now. no idea if it was the PSU or the Mobo but the new PSU is much quieter so going with the PSU.

Up amd running for a week or two now and so fsr so good. I find bench mark performance a bit shoddy compared to my intel setup. However in game its very good. Strangely in Vegas (video editing software) i can get my usage above 75% on all threads but its still quick. Much quicker than my i7 rendering video. Also silky silky smooth on live view editing. Massive win over the i7. In games its about the same as the i7 4790k to be honest.

It runs hot 75c stock but i have a very small case with poor airflow (node 202) with a cryorig c7 cooler so its not a optimum setup at all. It idles warm 45c but again such a small case. The only game i have found it does not like is rust. Its unstable and does not alway load. Maybe nothing to do with cpu but will try reinstalling it.

Boot times are good but bios takes longer to load than the intel counterpart so complete boot time is a few seconds slower.

Overall im impressed. It feels fast, runs games well and renders video like an absolute boss. Supprised how much it makes use of the cores actually i got a load of about 65% on 10 threads in gta5 with the 980ti locked at 99% at 4k res. Holding a steady 60fps on high settings mostly. Of course the 980ti cannot go very high or ultra at 4k but the cpu did not sweat.

So i will take back my dissapointment and blane it on some dead on arrival hardware and say its a better alrounder than my i7 for me peraonally as it games 99% as good and renders video much better. At a fraction of what my 4790k or equivelent would cost today.
