Discuss the new MSI GT 680 - OcUK Exclusive Laptop

Yeah, what is it with the gaming laptops looking like junk, it's really annoying. Been looking at one myself for when i go abroad and they all look like a seriously bad done up chav saxo!

Yeah, I'm not being funny but I think I'd feel relunctant to pull it out in public, I imagine a middle aged business man with a orange neon laptop would probably look silly in meetings too :D

Agree, most gaming laptops looks shocking. Another reason why I went for this one in the end- a gaming laptop without all the neon lights and garish coloured plastics

The spec of this Msi laptop is very similar to what mine has - i7 740QM, 8gb ,460m GTX I don't know why people seem to think the gpu isn't up to much for its gaming capabilities, its running nearly everything Im playing at it in high settings. Very pleased with it. Its a good combination and runs nice and cool. Price of the MSI looks great for the spec.

Markiejt, I got it from America and paid 1250 for it.

It's a G73-3DE if you fancy going for an import yourself.

Think this MSI machine will be brilliant if OCUK do get it out with a good screen for that money

I am actually in the market for a new laptop for gaming and work and have been looking at the asus g73 or possibly a sager/clevo I have been holding of buying one to see if there are any new offerings with sandy bridge /new gfx.
Here are my suggestions about what to have/what I am looking for

Must haves:
CPU -i7 Sandy Bridge
RAM - 6GB+
GFX - 460m+ minimum acceptable
Storage - Multiple hard drives
Display- decent 1080p screen

Desireable:
Good backlit island style keyboard
Onboard raid controller
Hybrid graphics switching so that you can use the sandy bridge gfx while not gaming to preserve battery life
Removeable optical drive with an option to add a hard drive adapter

Styling:
Most desireable: styled like a macbook pro or sony sz
Acceptable: Standard Matt black laptop or something like the Asus g73
WOuld definately stop me from buying: Garish Orange colours, LEDs, exessively large logos

Note about memory and hard drives what about offering a configurable memory /hard drive combination
Screen - 15.6 probably wins out unless the laptop weighs a ton in which case you may as well go for the 17 inch

MSI actually announced a laptop under this name at CES this week.

http://www.engadget.com/2011/01/04/msi-fords-the-sands-announces-sixteen-laptops-with-intel-core-2/

"15.6-inch GT680 delivering Dynaudio speakers, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 500 and 400-series graphics and dual SSDs".

Not sure if that means OCUK aren't getting an exclusive one built, or if it'll just be a different name, or variant of the above?

Yeah looks good out end of this Minh also so asuming it has a gtx500 series which beats the 5870 will be getting that

I have read the link but it is only related to the low end mobile cards. Nvidia have done this with the desktop recently as well by clocking the lower end cards higher and changing there name.

TBH 435m isnt a gaming card. so I will be looking for the 560m or the 570m to be in new lappy.

The specs do actually seem really good for the one announced at CES - I do wish they would tone down the styling though - the shiny bezel around the display is (IMHO) just terrible.
