Dishwasher caught fire!!

[..] Call the fire brigade out, they arrived in less than 10mins, went in all masked up and put the fire out.

Once they'd done that they were really good, they put the dishwasher in the back garden, started to mop up the floor and put a big fan in the house to help to clear the smell.
[..]

I had a similar experience with the fire brigade when my washing machine caught fire. I thought they'd make it safe and leave. I would have been pleased with that, especially as they arrived 5 minutes after I called for them. When they tidied up and did some cleaning too, I was amazed.

If the fire brigade part of my council tax was doubled, I'd still pay it without moaning.

I was luckier than you, though. I was at home and heard a wrongness in the noise of the washing machine, so I caught it right away. I live pretty close to the main fire station, too. So I got away with very little damage, not at all like the mess the fire made of your kitchen.

Tumble dryer yes, but I thought Dishwasher and Washing machine would be pretty safe?

The firemen advised me against it. Considering that my washing machine was still gently smouldering in my back garden where they'd put it and the only reason things weren't much worse was that I was at home and awake to hear the frenzied whine of the washing machine setting itself on fire and call the fire brigade immediately, their advice was particularly compelling.

If I don't need it on when I'm not at home and awake, I turn it off.

It is pretty safe to have white goods running when you're asleep or not there. "Pretty safe" doesn't really cut it when the risk is your home burning. Maybe with you in it.

It's like your microwave is doing a sly wink/raised eyebrow.

There's your problem. That's a microwave, not a dishwasher! :)

how is it that dishwashers are such a fire risk? i don't understand how they could possibly catch fire

It is like any device which is powered by electricity and involves water.

The risk is there if it be a dishwasher or washing machine.

What brand was your dishwasher nst68?
