Been using my brand new pc for about a week now. I got a GTX 580 to enjoy games like BF3.
However, in the 2 games I've tried, World of warcraft and BF3, while playing the screen will go black for about 5 seconds, then I See the desktop with the message
Display driver nvlddmkm stopped responding and has successfully recovered.

I've tried many drivers, 275.33 which apparently is the more stable one.
I then tried the official 285.62 and then the beta drivers made for BF3 285.79.
Each and every driver does the same thing after a while and this system is brand new. Specs are

16GB DDR3
Intel i7 3.4
Win 7 64bit
1000w PSU.

I've had no problems when using premiere pro or other programmes. To be fair I've only tried 2 games, but these are the 2 games I want to play and it keeps happening.
After some tweaks I found this on a forum:

Nvidia Control Panel --> Manage 3D Settings:

Power management mode: Prefer maximum performance

Nvidia Control Panel --> Set PhysX configuration

Select a PhysX Processor: CPU

However, this hasnt fixed it either. Was playing about 5 games today on and off. The last game crashed with the same after about 30 minutes.

Idle temp of the 580 is 49C and when playing bf3 about 65C.

I reduced some graphics settings on WoW (not sure why, this card should eat it alive) and it helped for a while. But I am at a loss. I'm also running BF3 on ultra with no problems, so far.

Any ideas?
At the moment I can't even play wow.

I just recently built my PC (last friday) and I too had problems with that message popping up but for another reason.

Anyways what solved it was updating the bios on my motherboard and now everything is perfect.

Intel Core i5-2500K 3.30GHz (Sandybridge) Socket LGA1155 Processor
Asrock Z68 Extreme4 Gen3 Intel Z68 (Socket 1155) DDR3 Motherboard
Kingston HyperX Genesis Grey 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit
Crucial RealSSD M4 128GB 2.5" SATA 6Gb/s Solid State Hard Drive
Gigabyte GeForce GTX 570 OC WINDFORCE 3X 1280MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card
OCZ ZX Series 850W '80 Plus Gold' Modular Power Supply
Antec Kúhler H2O 620 CPU Watercooler

Thats my new PC but ye try updating everything and hopefully it will work.

Yup, mine is a MSI GeForce GTX 580 OC Twin FrozR II 1536MB.
Something was mentioned about flashing to a different bios for the card. How do I go about doing it?

Also, I did lower the mhz to 772 as the thread suggested, but reading more the guy said it made no difference.
Afterburner shows voltage is at 1050
The thread also mentioned to use a voltage of 1150. Can changing these values cause any problems? I wan't to change it to test, but Im worried I'll fry something.

You should test that an increase in voltage fixes it first (using MSI Afterburner) before messing around with the BIOS.

It did in my case so it's worth a try?

So yours is already at 1050mV out of the box? it sounds as if you might have got a poor chip then, even more reason to try things at 772 core and leave the voltage alone.

1150 is a lot, I wouldn't go that high personally.

If your default voltage is 1050mV then I'd recommend you to try 772 core which is standard GTX580 clockspeeds, then you could always flash with the standard MSI BIOS but you'll lose 28mhz. The alternative is to RMA I guess.

Thanks for info.
I've set it to 772 and ill give it a test for the day. Try WoW and BF3.
I shall report back either way.
Again, thanks so much for help.

Well, I will say that setting it to 772 has fixed my problem.
So far, I've managed to play WoW and BF3 without any issues what so ever.

So far so good. Thanks all so much for the information and I hope other people in this situation will be able to get information that is useful.
