I suspect this will have some limitations. I would be very very surprised, if people could play their divx files off the net on the PS3 tbh.

Plus who want's to when H264 can be played at 720p or 1080p?

DivX files will probably have to conform to the standard resolutions and things. A lot of stuff on the net is just encoded willy nilly.

Yep, it's all gonna boil down to encoding profiles, and those that wanted to watch their low resolution pixelly files on their HDTV's are going to be disappointed.

Great news indeed.

Now, I would hope there is no DRM involved.
My current DVD player supports DRMd DivX files, but I've never used one.

I make a lot of DivX files myself, TV episodes that I want to keep.
I don't crunch the crap out of them like some internet eps do, I manually set the res to 720, and keep the bitrate to about 50% of the original.
Just means I can store more on a disk/HDD.

At the moment, I usually chuck what I want to watch on a DVD-RW, and to watch on my TV. They look fine, pretty much as good as they did before I DivXed them. So, if I could stream these straight from my server to the PS3, that would just be perfect.

Don't forget, you can encode DivX at any res, so nothing stopping HD divxs being made. My DVD player is officially DivX certified, and it plays back everything I've thrown at it so far (except HD ones) ;)

Now I think about it, actually I use XVID ;) Still, all the DivX players I've tried so far, both owned myself, and played at friends places, have played my XVID files as well, no probs, so if Sony want to actually make this DivX playback usefull, I'd imagine they'd allow the playback of all of them.

Hmmm, well, one would HOPE they'd do that.... these big companies don't always see sense ;)

V1N.

Until Microsoft make their announcement.

They've had their chance in the past, it should have been done a long time ago. I'm sure they must have been aware that the reason for large Xbox sales at the end of its lifecycle was due to the Media Center capabilities with a little bit of modification.
