Hi folks,

I have a light switch on the wall that doesn't seem to control any lights, anyway I've bought a blanking plate to fit over it as it has no use.

Anyway I've turned the lighting circuit off, taken the plate off of the old switch, and....... it's still wired in!

Now I'm guessing these wires are still live, but I have no multimeter to be sure. Is it safe to disconnect the wires and fit the blanking plate?

Ta.

Paul

Are you sure it's a light switch? If you are sure that it doesn't control anything, turn the power off to the whole house just to be sure, then use a choc block connector and terminate the wires into it. Fit the blank plate and turn power back on

damn, don't have any of those. oh well back to the hardware store.

Blind leading the blind... Why would you put a choc box which wont fit btw in a back box and blank it over?

all you need is a 5amp connector block connect the cable's together and fit said blanking plate, failing this get a qualified sparks in.

I'd be more interested in working out where the wires go... Is it an immersion heater? Isolator for the garage or loft. Why removed it, a switch looks better than a blank plate? Unless you do it properly and recessed and then plaster over it.

I dont buy my materials from ebay though I get them from wholesalers, trade terminology and diy isnt always the same. look what the writing on the picture says though ;)

What does that prove? You made a comment about the 'blind leading the blind' when you can't even differentiate between the word 'block' and 'box'. I only posted because I know chock block is a common term and it was quite obvious to me what he was talking about. The eBay link was just an afterthought as it showed even more that it's a common term.

I don't give a monkeys about 'trade' vs 'DIY' either, especially given the OP is going to be doing it himself.

I was saving him two trips if he went and asked for a choc box even block he probably would have come home with the wrong item. and a diyer telling a diyer what to do imo is the blind leading the blind.
