Posted in the general discussion about disco's and all i got was comment on crisps, so thought id post it in here.
looking to get a dj/disco for a night do and was wondering how much roughly they will be charging, say from 7 30 till 12 ish up north. just for a normal one?
TIA

haha think you dad is waaaay under charging.....!!!!!!

6 hours (+ travel + set up time/costs) for £125 - i wouldnt work for this would you?

£250 is around 1% of the cost of the day so id hardly say it was expensive!

Andy

yeah we was thinking at setting around £200 away for one,
want a good one that has some decent cd's and playes what we tell him to play rather than what he wants to. if that makes sence

i work with a mobile disco company, standard price we charge is £125
we use computers, have atleast 2 parties out every friday and saturday and seem very popular :)

Thats his usual too for a 12 finish, its around £140 if its 1am.

He (sometimes we) use a laptop and CD players. CDs make for a better night but are harder to tidy up after the do is finished :p

DJ's in the Stoke area charge around £125 but make sure you don't get a 'catalogue disco' (a catalogue disco is somebody who bought all their gear from ARGOS).

Also make sure they've got all the music you want for the night and tell them exactly what you want playing.
Also make sure that they will leave their strobes at home if required.

If theres one thing that gets on my nerves is people saying they had a crap disco when they could have requested certain things before booking.
It is a well known fact that if you don't talk to the DJ he will play what he wants.

So true, I once got asked to do an RAF officers NYE party, no one spoke to me about it other than to say "can you do 8 til 1?". It was 1992, so, I went along with my bag full of hardcore and whites :D, didnt go off too badly in the end, despite some really odd looks for the first couple of hours . The bar was free so by 1030 they were all ratfaced :p and most of the older Officers got their kids (16+) in by 11 too. So I had fun, played what I wanted and got paid for it.

It also happens the other way.
Somebody will watch my band play and try to book us for a wedding.
They have just seen us doing 100 minutes of ACDC, Black Sabbath, Led Zep, Judas Priest etc covers and then ask if we would be able to tone it down and maybe play some rock n roll.
I always advise them to get a decent disco and tell them exactly what you want.

Yep, a lad that works for my dad had that a few weeks ago. They gave no requests before or ont eh night so he just played what he felt fit, and at the end of the night the guy said it was a crap disco and wanted part of the bill knocked off (they were basically a big group of chavs that wanted their max hardcore crap all night)........he was told where to go by the hotel owner in short as he hadnt informed them he wanted that kind of stuff.

Me and my dad have one on Saturday, a lesbian wedding, should at least be an interesting night :p

Over the last 37 years I have heard this story so many times and people don't realise that if the music is crap at a disco they've hired then its their fault.
Every DJ I've witnessed will go out of their way to accomodate but can't unless you ask.
However, the very worst case I've come across is a Biker Rally I do with my band at Oswestry.
The DJ knew he was doing a Biker Rally but turned up with no rock music except the album Innuendo by Queen. he played this album through 4 times during the evening.
We went on did our set and finished with Whole Lotta Rosie by AC/DC, he comes on and starts with Agadoo (I thought they were going to kill him).
The following year he's there again
His rock collection now consisted of DJ rock collection cd's where all the tracks last about 1 minute and segue into each other.
To our utter amazement he was there the 3rd year but this time armed with a laptop that still consisted of no real rock.
Bikers were moaning all over the place but who's fault was it? - the Triumph Biker Owners.

On our website and the very first thing I say at a gig is "If you hear something wrong with the sound then let us know immediately because you're paying for this". (We can't trust our roadie cause he's always drunk).
I will then ask after every other song if the sound is OK but I'll guarantee at the end of the night some punter will say "Couldn't hear your voice mate" :(

LOL - that actually made me chuckle, can just imagine it now, you dropping some hardcore and all the hardened RAF nuts "avin it!".
