I have only owned Yamaha... I,'m curious to know if there is a real world difference between them all??

I'm tempted to go for pioneer for my next Av receiver which will be s 5.1setup

Fronts and centre are a good 3m from me, so any impact from a particular brand would be in the surround field

:)

All av receivers have their own particular sound. Whether you can differentiate or not depends entirely on the quality of your speakers and their ability to project the difference, and the anality of your ears.

Yes, yes they do sound different. For my PC audio systen I have a Yamaha as I found them good reliable units, with a fairly safe sound quality. Although they are lacking in power but since I'm 50cm from the speakers that isn't a concern (and for the main system my amps are 300W x7)

Pioneer have a more brighter sound to them.

As for surround field if you mean DSP I usually don't use any, just sticking to the straight through surround processing.

What is your budget?

I've heard receivers and processors from nearly all of the different manufacturers and the best by far is Anthem, though the current range is very expensive. I'm currently running the Anthem MRX 720 and it sounds amazing, especially with Atmos.
