Do cars detune

Do cars de-tune themselves to increase efficiency when there's only a small amount of fuel in the tank?

I'm not sure if it's placebo or not but they always seem to pull harder after filling up from empty.

Or more likely you subconsciously use more boot when the tank is nearly full
