Hi guys,

Just an observation but do all new NICs work with all types of Cat wiring? Both standards (A & B) and straight/crossover?

Its just I was just doing some testing with an old hub and I inadvertently used a crossover cable between the hub a host - that didn't work (the machine is about 12 years old) however, before I realised I tried the cable in another machine (about 3 years old) and it worked...

I was under the impression that crossover could only be used, peer-to-peer

Most newer NICs will do auto MDI/MDIX so they'll automatically cross/uncross a cable if they detect it's required. Newer switches will also do this.

Most logical explanation is that your old machine's NIC doesn't support auto MDI/MDIX and your new machine's NIC does.
