Might be a daft question but I've had lots of use out of my 40D but it seems to be slower and producing really disappointing images despite the good light that we've been having recently.

My 50D seems to react much, much quicker when tested with the same lenses.

Beaten to it, the shutter being the main mechanical part is the only thing that really has a life span, 40,000-60,000 on basic DSLRs and 100,000 on your 40D.

Thats a bit worrying, my D60 has nearly 43k in just 14 months use
hope you're wrong.

You can check the number of shutter actuations a Nikon camera has made using a tool such as this, no idea if it works for other makes

I import my photos with Lightroom and it appears to reset the counter randomly .

The tool Kenai posted is awesome, thanks.

4436 pics taken since Dec 08. I think i need to get snapping, thought it would have been more than that :D.

I thought I was bad with 17k in 18 months

I think both my 400D and your D60 are rated for 50,000 actuactions, of course this doesn't mean they'll suddenly die at 50,001. It's just a minimum that's expected from them.
