i'm studying a hnd course at college and wondering what the rules are for missing lessons? i missed a few because of sleep problems which are pretty much sorted now and i was emailed saying i have to turn up to atleast 80% of my lessons or i will get kicked out which is fair enough if the lessons were actually useful but they aren't. I'm wondering as i am paying for this course and getting top top marks on all the work im doing will they really kick me out a course if i miss more then 20% of the lessons?

Now i have no problem going to class if it's worth it, but never ever has it been. We get given work (which easily could be emailed to us) and spoken to for a moment which takes no more then 10 minutes, often less, and then told to do the work, which is hard to do on the school computers in an environment which i hate. the class is bascially designed for the bottom end students leaving the top end to basically sit there do nothing and do the work at home.

Yeah so any way is the 80% just a scare tactic or will they really chuck me out of the course for this?

How are we supposed to answer that? It's up to your college.

Pretty much the above, every college enforces rules differently.

The 80% is usually part of the course, IE you need to complete all coursework and be there 80% of the time.

When I went there was a similar rule, however there was one girl who went far below 80% attendance. Parents called in, warnings etc. Just basically told to shape up.

She could have got away with it because she had big breasts, you don't have a pair of those do you?

If they say they'll chuck you out... they'll chuck you out. Rather obvious isn't it?

Sounds like you do need to go to classes afterall tbh.

I didn't believe me when my history teacher said he'd chuck me out for not attending classes...

let's just say I didn't get an A2 in history :(

Depends on the college.

Unofficially, it seems my 6th form does not like to kick people out of courses. Why? It brings down the overall mark for the class which reflects poorly on the teacher.

dang doesn't sound good for me then. sucks as the lessons are such a drag and waste of time which kind of puts me off the course. I might email one of the teachers about this and see if i can do work at home or maybe go in and out or something.

thanks for the replies guys

I think the 80% rule is a general rule in place my bost establishments. We were told this at the start of the year and so far i have only missed two classes iirc.

My tax lecturer gave us a little lecture when there was only 6 or so of us out of a class of at least double that. She didn't seem to mind i was falling asleep as i turned up and was learning the stuff but hated the fact the others were getting bursaries to come to class and they wouldn't turn up and it would be they people who would turn up to revision classes just before the exam.

Prove to them that you're getting good grades and they wont care about attendance. All they want is results.

I tried to tell my Uni that last year. Basically the first year of the course was dealing in things I already knew about and although I averaged a first throughout the year attendance was still compulsory.

My mate had a teacher like that last year. By the end of the year, hed already passed the unit so he didnt bother with his coursework. He saw it as "he had the grades for Uni, so he could spend more time revising". The teacher went to the point of turning up to his house an hour before the work was sent off and collected the work he had done up to that point.

All so that if he got an A, it would look better on her end of year review.

I hardly ever turned up, went in late a LOT! Still passed, done most of it in a week, and never got kicked out.

Always used to scare the crap out of me when I saw people turning up for exams I had never seen before. For just a fraction of a second I'd brick it thinking I was in the wrong exam :p
