Do I7 /I5 CPUs run hot ?

I've noticed that all Intel chips run hotter than "equivalent" AMD chips. I don't know why though... Even people that have lapped theirs and have a humungous cooler seem to run hotter.

My AMD 720 X3 BE runs at <40°C constantly, cooled by a freezer pro 64, while my brothers Core2Quad cooled by a monster Coolermaster V8 runs at closer to 60. All benchmarks i've seen have shown some temps that I would call scary as well.

The thing is, Intel chips don't mind the heat as much as AMD ones. Not sure of any thresholds, but as far as I know, Intel chips just run hotter.

Depends totally on clocks, cooling and stepping. My 920 runs about 72c full load, but it's under water.

The i7s are definitely pretty toasty but apparently the i5s are quite a lot cooler.

I don't really know whether what you say about Intel running hotter than AMD is true or not tbh, don't have an AMD chip to compare with, however your brother gets 60c? Is that on idle or under load? If it's on idle, then maybe you you tell him to reseat his heatsink and apply thermal paste properly?

My i7 860 runs pretty cool, its currently between 36 and 37c for the cores at idle using the stock cooler.

case has pretty damn good airflow though.

They run very cool at stock but once you put the volts up a touch and overclock it, they will go up to 70-80c depending on your cooling, although those temps are ok on full load to be fair.

My experience is yes , they do seem to run slightly hotter. I have used a Q6600 and a Q9550 and both run considerably cooler on something like the arctic freezer pro , and im using a Corsair H50 on my i7 and its high 30's idle and high 70's load.

They are designed that way , the thermal limit is 100 so loads of head room.
