Do Tiffany's diamonds sparkle more/better, or am I susceptible to suggestive marketing

A guy buying his Mrs-to-be an engagement ring is pretty much the opposite of gay :|

A guy talking about how sparkly diamonds are is as gay as it comes.......Missus or no Missus.......manly men take another woman or their gay friend to help them choose.....

Ditto for her (or does she knows her diamonds)

She's a woman, so were the friends she bought along and they know what women like.....one of whom was a jeweller though....but that isn't the point......you're asking a forum populated by geeky blokes about how sparkly you think Tiffany diamonds are.....you must admit that is a bit gay.

Someone in a past thread posted a great link to a site with section detailing cut, colour & clarity and how the affect the appearance or "sparkle" of a stone. Might be worth a search of past threads :)

Essentially I seem to remember that there is some sort of optimum shape/cut which reflects the most light and gives the best amount of "sparkle".

Tiffanys do use good quality diamonds, much better then the general high street ie beaverbrooks etc and the mounts are generally very open allowing as much light as possible to get to the stone. The stores (like most jewellers) are also very well lit which makes the diamonds appear to sparkle a lot more.

I did loads of research when buying my other half and engagement ring and the ket to sparkle is the cut of the diamond as this determines how light is reflected within it and from shopping around it became clear that the sparkle of a quality cut made the diamond appear much bigger and brighter than larger stones with a lesser cut.

this site is a good read

I had the Tiffany style 'classic' setting made custom and then sourced a diamond from a jeweler friend. Ring is valued for an exceptional amount, and if I had of bought it from Tiffany's it would have been stupidly priced. However, if you know who you are talking to, you'll get an amazing diamond for half the price. Start talking to jewelers, not shops!

Wow, the whole of the Angolan government is gay then - you learn something every day!

The Angolan Govt are more interested in lining their pockets with proceeds from dirty diamonds to worry about how sparkly Tiffany diamonds are compared to Beaverbrooks.....

I can't really imagine blood diamond traders going "Oooh! Look how sparkly this diamond is....how lovely!!!!"

If you want to know the clarity, cut and carat of a diamond, ask a reputable jeweller, gushing over how sparkly it all is, is just gay!

I bet they do. I bet they say "hmm how lovely that will buy me a few pickups with KPVs on the back."

No need to go to Tiffany's, although they do stock good quality, the markup is massive. You can go to a small independent jeweller who should be able to give you a much more competitive price, and you can also have a say on the design if you're interested in customising or actually designing your own ring. Though it takes some artistic talent or understanding which some of us aren't blessed with! :p

By all means go to Tiffany's to get an idea, but don't get suckered into thinking there is no better - there is.

I bet they don't.....given that most diamonds coming out of Angola are rough and yet to be cut and polished..They are probably saying "********* look at the size of that ******"...:p

just bought one myself last week, this is everything I learned:

would avoid tiffany / brands - a diamond is something that is marked up pretty heavily anyway, let alone slapping a brand name ontop as well, you will loose a fair chunk of value to the shop straight away

wouldnt bother going above vvs1 for clarity, d-j for colour,
better to get a good balance of everything rather than just going for size, and above vs1 you wouldnt be able to see anything wrong anyway so not really worth paying the extra for

anything below 0.4c seemed pretty small, 2c seems massive

platinum is the best material for the band, although palladium is just as good really and cheaper, white gold seems to get knacked quickly

dont go any lower than "good" on the cut scale, it affects the sparkleynessness

dont buy one unless it comes with a GIA certificate
I went to brighton which has many many shops, so can get a fair idea of pricing / what you get for your money pretty easily
