Do you think Bands / Artists should "Play The Game"

Ting Tings - give me a break.

Every TV show in history that has had artists on has been a selling out show to some people.
If you're a fan you would welcome Jimi Hendrix being on the Cilla Black show or Budgie being on the Bay City Rollers show.
Top Of the Pops was the biggest sell out show for decades but virtually everybody would make an appearance if asked so they could sell out.
I can't think of any better show than X-Factor for a current artist to appear on no matter what genre.
In America bands like Kiss and Metallica embrace Pop Idol but not to sell more records (they have enough money) but to get their music out there (and of course to sell records).
Ting Tings need to grow up.

excellent post

sums my thoughts up entirely.

Great debate so far, keep 'em coming :)

I would say it depends on who it is, I mean, I highly doubt the Ting Tings will damage whatever reputation they have by appearing on the x-factor, they will most likely sell more records though so it's in their best interests to go on the show as they are a pop group and thats what pop groups do.

I agree. This sort of thing has been going on for years and years. It's nowt new.

Wasn't there a time when "playing the game" meant "selling out" and it was something bands (not pop artists) were reluctant to do?

These days there are enough ways for bands to get publicity without having to make "cheap and nasty" tv appearances.

why is appearing on the X Factor such a bad thing ? How does it damage your credibility as an artist ?

It's a poor show which appeals to the LCD, it's not a show that does anything for real music. It actually makes a mockery of music.

In the words of a musician, it's cheap and nasty. (I don't like The Ting Tings)
