Do you think the western world is becoming harder to live in?

I agree with your viewpoint, in the 80s when my parents were 'joining real life' and getting their first proper jobs, cars and renting their own house they would not have dreamed of spending 500 pounds each per year for a phone. Yet now I work in a store at weekends and there are people on minimum wage (+ a little bit) spending that amount on their phone and getting year old cars on credit.

I don't see how you can make such claims, I'm sure had the technology existed to your parents, I dare say they would do exactly the same thing.

Work ethic was different in those days though and people lived within their means.

Btw who are those people in your sig? (looks interesting).

Mr. White & Jesse Pinkman.

From the TV series Breaking Bad.

It is possible the ethic was different back then but I'd still imagine they would have a phone on a monthly contract if such technology was available.

I lol every single time I see the term "average salary".

Why on earth use an average for something with such an unbalanced distribution, the mode is a far better indicator for income distribution - but hey, I guess it fluffs to the figures to make everybody think the typical Brit is earning more than they do.

Hell, I'd cut off anything 3 times above/below the standard deviation (removing the outliers & extremes) - but that would royally screw the figures (to show the actual state of the typical person in the UK).

And the massive reduction in interest rates - see earlier in this thread for the calculation of the percentage of a persons salary a mortgage took up in the land of super cheap wonder houses that was the 1980's versus today...

And that. I hadn't got to the third page by then. :P

Actually the median is generally considered the most "accurate". Which comes out as £26k for a full time worker at the moment.
