do you think there's a lot more to come from the 2900?

R.I.P ATi, lets give have a big round of applause for AMD for taking em down. :(

What?

Its not that big a deal. They have admittedly lost custom due to the slipping release date of the R600, and the performance whilst not on a par with the GTX is certainly not bad.

I can think of far worse blunders in the GFX card world. The demise of 3DfX being one of them! I'm sure AMD/ATI will recover from this, its no different to CPU wars. Intel lagged behind for so long and now the tables have turned.

Heck even im routing for ATI and these magic drivers and I got an GTX and relatively happy with it.

Its never a good sign to see ATI struggeling and we all know Nvidia could release a lemon or 2 and still come back with a winner but ATI that would be difficult.

I hope come September they do release there HD2950XT and XTX and quickly phase out the HD2900XTs, and im sure ATI can do it.

No-one said anything about the 7.5's being the performance increasing driver that "we all want". I'd be more than happy just to have stable vista running at the moment, the framerates are good, certainly not great, but definately good.

I think that there is a fair amount of performance to be had out of vista yet, not only is the support in the drivers for the card still young, the OS as a whole and the new driver architecture is young, both with much room for improvement on implementation.

Look how long it took ATi to get full performance out of the 9800PRO, heck, they were still optimising for the R350 core when the R360 was released, and even then a few good months after.

I certainly don't expect miracles with 7.5's, but do expect increases in the future.

im waiting for some vista drivers too. hopefully next ones will be good for my x1900xt to do some good gameing in vista

Ahh its so funny to see everyone thinking they know the best, seriously fanboyism is bad OK :)

I can't belive that the 2900xt has reached its max potential, it will get faster with newer drivers. Just like the 8800 series is getting faster with driver updates.

Thats just the way the business work, but I wish people would stop trying to scry in their crystal balls for answers and then come and flavour their readings with their fan boy colours.

It's fun to read a bit of banter, but when every damn thread has to go and get derailed cause of my sand box is bigger than your sand box rubbish its getting really tedious.

I wouldnt be expecting ATI to be rolling and releasing magic drivers this soon, hopefully they concentrate on XP then Vista.

Even before I enjoyed the odd Rant about Nvidia/ATI and poor Vista drivers but then I thought they got Vista 32bit/64bit and then XP, so they been dumped with 2-3x the workload lol no wonder why both ATI/Nvidia are struggling driver wise ;)

lol Nvidia aint struggling driver wise, not doing drivers because of no competition has nothing to do with them struggling, they are going to constantly release drivers now as ATi have finally released. :)

Sauce?

I love the way N fans are so laid back when it comes to drivers. Please remind me, which graphic card company was threatened with a lawsuit because it repeatedly failed to provide Vista support?

man this thread is top quality entertainment, we've got tom and the other guy intent on simply insulting eachother, mav giving us expert opinion on theoretical performance of GPUs, tell me can you explain (without reading anything online) how a GPU works, whats involved and how these theoretical numbers effect real-world numbers, conroe is a PERFECT example of how theoretical numbers are total ********, a C2D will do super-pi 1M in half the time it takes my X2, but its NOT twice as fast doing anything else, not even by a longshot, so it just goes to show don't always rely on synthetic numbers and theoreticals to judge how something performs, R600 is technically more complex than G80, its very unfamiliar territory for ATI, even with there xenos processor, also there problems with getting the card suitable for launch as hardware has proberbly halted the software aspects of the task, they will fix the AA problems i don't doubt, but hey you gotta wonder how does something with so much 'potential' power come out and turn out so slowly, its gotta be dodgy drivers at the end of the day, i mean 320 streams 16 ROPs, higher clock speed vs. 96 streams 20 ROPs and lower clock speed, how on earth is the 2900 slower?

Nice post :)

And the clock thing at the end is right, the XT can 'theoretically' output 11.9 gigapixels/ sec while the GTS can only do 10 gigapixel/ sec. Pity this doesn't translate to real-world performance atm....

Your forgetting though, it may have the better specs etc... but that does not mean it will be the faster/better card. :)

The trend is that normally the better the specs the faster the card, but it all lies down on the drivers at the end of the day.

so because the 2900 has got 320 streams etc... it should be absolutely obliterating the GTX in everything as it has more, it doesn't work like that. :)
