Do you use the internet to make people think you're clever?

here at work, we use IM to talk to people in other rooms to save calling and walking. obviously, this system is abused quite a bit and I sometimes find myself (as the "geeky one in the web department") being asked all sorts of dumb questions over IM about the most random crap ever. I have absolutely no hope of knowing any of the stuff I'm ever asked - luckily, Google hasn't failed me yet and it just makes more people ask me more random stuff! Would you admit to cheating, or have people think you're a fountain of completely useless knowledge?

Does anyone else do this?

yep, and i sit thinking how stupid the person asking is for not using google int he first place

you're clever in the sense you have the brain to use google.
Nothin wrong with using resources at your disposal is there, you would be stupid not to :)

Surely you're the stupid one for answering stupid questions when they could be looking it up themself and saving you time and effort? :D

I do.

"Rich, why does xxxx do yyyy?"
*types 'xxxx yyyy wiki' into google*
'Ah well, it's because of zzzz'
"You know so much useless crap"
'Yes. Yes I do'

Quite often I find that works. Even copy/pasting the thread titles on here sometimes into the google box in Firefox, the first result is often the answer to someone's question..

Its best used on woman, it generally makes things a hell of a lot easier if they think you are a fountain of knowledge.

There are 1000's of people in Stoke who think I'm a computer genius and its all because of Google.
I had my own PC with internet connection at work so I got asked the most stupid questions however my immediate 4 work colleagues also had internet connections.
Still they would ask dumb questions so I would walk over to their computers, put Google on, type the question in and read out loud the words on the screen.
This procedure went on for about 2 years until one of them realised they could do it themselves.
I must admit that I felt left out when I used to see them typing stuff in themselves and it was as though my secret had been lost.

Not really, unless I'm at home and a mate's at a pub quiz.

I'm not insecure enough to feel that I need lots of random **** in my head in order to impress people.

edit - didn't read the OP properly - I thought a social person to person basis was meant, not over the internet.

Ooh, catty there from Gilly. :p

Most of my mates already think I'm a fountain of useless knowledge anyway so checking for more on Google isn't really going to alter that perception. Although that probably isn't because I know a lot, I just know some really pointless stuff.

However sometimes for questions on the forums I'll search for the answer then 'translate' it into less technical terms because the person has clearly found it overwhelming in the state it is. Either they don't want to or can't spare the time to understand it which is often fair enough.
