I have DOC with Bell Flexi policy.
I've had a look at the policy documents and it doesn't mention the other car needing to be insured for me to drive it 3rd party. It also doesn't say the other car doesn't need to be insured.

Do you think I can therefore assume the other car does NOT need to be insured?

Thanks for the replies.

The car has MOT and tax :)

PMKeates - thanks, saved me phoning them :D

And I think you're wrong.

I think you're both wrong.

It varies from company to company, so it's worth checking.

My mum drove my car before I had insurance on it, and she phoned the broker to ask,and they said it varies from company to company, but that she was allowed to drive an uninsured car ;)

Two points

1) That doesn't necessarily make Fox wrong
2) That is just adding evidence to say that you can drive an uninsured car.

You would need an example of a company saying no.

1) it does, as he said that you always can, but it varies from insurer to insurer
2) yes you can, but it varies by insurer.

So basically it's best to check, better to be safe than soprry and all that.

Don't you think you should phone them to be 100% sure rather than take the word of a random stranger from the internet? It would suck to go out and ditch the car only to find you're not insured.

I specifically checked this with Bell and they confirmed over the telephone that the other vehicle need not be insured.

i work under one of the brands that work with bell and aslong as your 25y.o + and a few other niggley factors we would offer you d.o.c which would cover you against driving other cars, the insurance covers you at a 3rd party only level so the car wouldnt need to be insured.

OT, there was one case when a guy who had DOC, drove his mates car, stop to get petrol and when paying a police man asked him if he had insurance, which he replied "yes i got insurance on my car which gives me DOC to drive other vehicles with the owners premission" and the cop gave him a warning because he wasnt actually driving the car at the time, i got a feeling though that he might of been a bit smarty pants to the police man

Normally I would although I was fairly sure I was ok anyway, the policy documents didn't mention the need for the other car to have insurance and after it was confirmed on here I felt happy enough without phoning them.

Apart from with Bell on their flexi policy you don't have to be 25, you just pay a little extra for DOC to be added, I think I paid about £30.

I had Bell add DOC cover to my policy (I'm 21 btw) and it cost about 2% of the policy value. Is there a reason that it seems only Bell brand of Admiral offer DOC to under 25's?

i meant my department you need to be 25+ my apologises :p

i believe they offer it because bell are suppose to keep insurance down by letting you choose what goes on to your policy where as admiral etc go by risk factors and i believe that they take 25 as a good age/driving experience,

in my eyes i think its a bit silly as you could pass your test at 25 and you can have it but have to drive for 5 years if you pass at 20

I agree that the restrictions they impose are a bit silly. Though I'd much prefer a system of insured drivers rather than insured drivers in certain cars, so I like DOC as a concept!
