Does anyone else think this is wrong?

He's hardly steeling off anyone, just taking back some of the money his parent's have paid into the system. I'm sure they would prefer it going to their son rather than a random.

********

Dont pay in, dont claim.
His parents covered their share, not his.

***** students are the worse for feeling "entitled"

Yeah, his parents did, exactly. If his parents are going to pay for some random persons JSA money, then why must he be excluded? I would certainly tell my children to get some of my tax back, when and if i have children.

What, to an education? How dare they want to actually learn things

No. As someone who paid little attention in school I encourage people to seek further education. However, he still has no right to claim. Can't claim what you have not put in. Seeing as a uni place is sorted he should be taking time off and learning to to all those mundane things his parents have done for him. Such as washing, cleaning, budgeting etc etc everything all students fail at.

Having lived in shared accommodation with students...they all fail at basic life terribly.

Wow. Some of the opinions in this thread make me really sad. No one owes anyone **** in this instance, and no you don't have a right to university education at all. If you want to go, you pay, simple as that. It doesn't mean you're morally entitled to claim from a system you have never contributed to and have absolutely no need to claim from.

But if you're the only one that can do it you have to do it for everyone else too. Nobody wants that. It's like being the only one that can drive at a party :p

Lol..spoken like a former student. I wasn't given such luxuries in life. If you were able to grip then you were able to dry dishes. Tall enough to reach the sink, then you were old enough to wash dishes etc I was cooking and cleaning after myself since I can remember really. Something that lacks in modern day society.

Well if he's not payed national insurance in the last 2 (I think) years he won't get cash for 6 months so it's a bit of a waste of time.

Anyway it's not all that cool really but if he wants to then theres not a lot stopping him.

Will still get income based JSA I think just not contribution based.

When I worked in the Jobcentre a few years back, I'm pretty sure claiming over the summer holidays wasn't possible unless you lied about future plans. I seem to remember that for JSA purposes, the academic year ran from Sept-Sept so you had to wait until September came around before you could put in a claim.

*EDIT* - I've just checked and this is still the case. So not only is he claiming benefits to which he doesn't really need but he is probably fraudulently claiming too.

Full-time students
If you’re studying full time, you may be able to claim Jobseeker's Allowance during the summer holiday if one of the following apply:
you're a single parent who is responsible for a child or young person
you have a partner who is also a full-time student, and one or both of you is responsible for a child or young person
You also need to be available for and actively seeking work.
You may also be able to claim if you’re waiting to go back to a course, having taken approved time out for a period of up to one year because of an illness or caring responsibility that has now come to an end.

I did it back in the early 90's. I knew it wasn't 100% right but when you're that young it's "LOL free money". Anyway i've paid a massive amount of tax after that in PAYE so i've more then paid it back that way

He will be able to claim from June - Sept in most cases tho AFAIK it will depend a bit on whether he can convince whoever is validating the claim that he really is looking for employment in the mean time. Technically he won't be studying full time until the course starts and will be able to claim from the end date of the previous course until the start date of the next.

Yea they say that, But go ahead and pay you from he week you sign on.

My wife did it straight out of uni until she got a job, they paid her from the get go.

I worked in a supermarket and after uni temped in retail for a few hours a week.... I found this much more rewarding financially and met some great people.

Perhaps because it wasn't permanent and I wasn't reliant on the wage to survive, but looking back, the supermarket job was the best I've ever had. For some reason I really enjoyed it.

Didn't even consider applying for JSA... And still wouldn't.

You have to really make an effort not to get paid at all even if your claim is "suspended" you will still get something like £38 a week (hardship payments).

I've had 2 long workless summers (mostly to read and study and relax) between university courses and I never claimed JSA on either of them. That's morally repugnant. If you're not looking for work why would you claim the Job Seekers Allowance? If your friend is going to university he should either be spending the summer reading his reading list or trying to find some part-time work for pocket change.

On the flipside if he genuinely was looking for work it might not be so easy to come by. In the past about this time of year we'd be taking on school/college leavers to fill temp positions until we start recruiting christmas temps about sept. but last 2 years with the economy like it is we simply haven't been hiring or only 1-2 positions if we do.
