Just curious really, Ive read a lot of rumours that it drops significatly when your 21, is any of this true or is it just an old wives tale?

Its gotta do - Mine drops by 1k in October, and im only getting first years no claims and ill be 19..

I thought it was25, as all the stuff that they come up with is 'are you 17-25' or 'if you are under 25 we wont insure you on that car'.

If it does drop when you are 21 (and been driving since 17 and a half) and have no noclaims, I'll be happy in a years time :p.

Old wives tale. Only difference is some insurers become a tad more open to half decent cars.

Yeh, that's what I figured...still I hope to get myself a car (brother basicaly owns my 306 in sig now :() and build up my noclaims again...had 2 years...lost them when I went to uni.

Correct, most places wouldnt insure me on my car until i was 21, once i was a lot more places would quote me. Quite a few still refuse to until i am 25.

It depends which insurer you're talking about. With Tesco for example it seems to make a big difference. I did 2 quotes for my brother last year, one for the day before his 21st birthday and one for on his 21st birthday. The day before yielded a quote in excess of £800; on his birthday the quote was around £600 iirc. That's a fairly staggering 25% drop. Needless to say, he waited the extra day :p

a lot of companys said I couldn't be insured on my car until I was 25 - or anything over a 2L infact....

Went to Admiral and they did it, figured they would as they insure PMKeates and he lives about half an hour (if that tbh) away from me.

Didn't drop much for me on normal cars but made a difference on hot hatch quotes.

25 was the biggy price drop.

I'm bored at the minute (supposed to be working from home, but can't be bothered) so tested out a few ages using Tesco car insurance.

Used a 2001 Focus 1.6 Zetec as the sample car and kept everything else except the age the same.
Here are the results, as you can see there are big drops at both 21 and 25 with 25 being a larger relative drop in price.

Age Price
17 £2,980.95
18 £2,690.10
19 £2,501.10
20 £2,198.70
21 £1,575.00
22 £1,484.70
23 £1,349.25
24 £1,300.95
25 £958.65
26 £936.60
27 £908.25
28 £869.40
29 £841.05
30 £758.10

Its a gradual drop. If your dealing with a broker like the AA for example then they can draw on more companies for quotes when you are 21 which may result in a sudden drop I guess

21 is the age where some insurers will let you drive other cars TPFT when your fully comp. Otherwise they're not interested sub-21 :) Oh and of course it been cheaper too but not as much as when your 25 although depends on NCB's aswell.

BeatMaster :D

Think it depends more on the car tbh. Ive never paid over £600 from I passed my test.

My current insurance is under £300 @ 25 and on a turbo coupe :D

Pah, mine dropped by 1300 with my first years NCB :D

But anyhoo - regarding the 21 thing, I don't think it's that large a drop. I find out in a few months but my insurance is relatively cheap anyway.

Reckon it'll be about 500 quid fully comp on my 3.5 this year, all mods declared as usual along with the new ones :)

Will be tempted to try a few different places this year though.

What an absolutely ridiculous set of figures. As if it would EVER cost £1300 to insure a 1.6 Focus at 24! Even with no NCB, a claim, being younger, and insuring a Group 17 3 litre car my insurance renewal is less than that.

And at 30 on that car it'd be closer to £300. These figures are utterly meaningless.

£2k for a Focus 1.6 at 20! Thats twice what I paid for a Mondeo 2.0!

Ease up dude, it shows the sliding scale and the drops at 21 and 25 well enough which it was meant to, I assume this is with 0 ncb etc etc as a baseline quote.
