My Boxer chewed through the cable to a standard lamp while switched on .... clean break of the cable and not a sign of damage to the mutt: happened while I was out and she's never felt the need since so I suppose she got off light

Unfortunately it's one of those things that everyone should have them by law and should be promoted. training to be a spark means you see things which make you cringe worse than no RCD protected circuits.
