Dogs parachuted into Afghanistan

What is the time frame for these 8 dog mortalities? A week? Year? The entirety of Op Herrick?

The article is trying to make it seem like a high attrition rate and I would bet they have deliberately omitted the time frame to give that impression. Training dogs takes time and money, they're not going to be wasting them willy nilly.

edit:
SAS troops deployed in Iraq, where they were engaged in "kill or capture" missions against al-Qaida insurgents and Saddam Hussein lieutenants, have in the past two years switched to Afghanistan, joining their naval counterparts, the SBS.
If that's the time frame then wet the bed that's 4 a year!

Why not send tigers in?

They may end up eating the soldiers first. They are wild animals and as soon as they see open space, they may end up running away before they get to taliban. Plus I don't think you can train tigers to go after certain people like you could do with a dogs. From tigers perspective the soldiers and the taliban insurgents would be the same. Dog is more loyal to the owner than a tiger is;).

A tiger would be more interested in hunting in the wilds than following human instructions ;)

You don't say.

Because there's only a couple of them left, and they certainly weren't designed for warfare indoors, they would just demolish the whole house :3

Also, this thread is worse than most of the threads I've read in the Graphics Card forum recently. Its amazing how much facepalm one person can produce!

I think it is an excellent idea and I love dogs. German shepherds were bred over many centuries to perform these sort of tasks (although the video camera bit is new!)

+1 War dogs are one of the oldest weapons, they where being used back in the bronze age. Roman, Greek, and perticularly British war dogs where renound for being unbelievably terrifying(mastiffs anyone ). They where reviererd with troops and feared by enimes.

Would think that the soliders who are deployed with these 'war' dogs would think of them as a comrade and a incredibly usefull tool, and one which they woudnt just send to their death.:)

Shepherds are working dogs, it's what they're bred for despite they're also a good family pet.

The Russians seem to of taken it to the extreme, training the dog to run under a tank and set the bomb off taking the dog with it isn't on, you could train the dog to carry the bomb and then drop it if it's clever enough to run under a tank, at least the dog can have the chance to save it's life.
