been watching a few youtube vids about atmos, and how its a game changer

currently got a 2.1 philips soundbar which is a few years old (and to be fair was £40 from ebay)

looking for some real reviews:
i.e. is it game changing, any recommendations, what are they like on non atmos source?

If you have full wired ceiling speakers then it's game changing However, most soundbars require a room with good acoustics as they bounce the sound off walls and ceilings. While it does work to a degree, you do need like standard ceiling heights and a good room shape to achieve maximum potential.

I wouldn't worry so much about the term Atmos as well, anything with a decent sound stage will be miles better than what you have now and I'd focus more on that ideally. Most will deal with standard content very well. Depends what type of content you watch as that would help?

If you can't invest in wires, then I'd suggest looking into the Sony HT-A9. While it's expensive, it does a much better job than soundbars for overhead effects and offers a very wide sound stage. Speakers can also be placed in a lot of optimal positions.

If you want a soundbar package then I'd go for the new Samsung Q990B. If you want a standalone soundbar on its own, then I'd go for the Sonos arc, can always add further products down the line then.

If you live anywhere near Berkshire, always welcome to come hear my A9'S. :)

A proper atmos system isn't even a game changer, it's not like going from stereo to 5.1

It's a subtle effect, if you've already got a good 7.1 system then atmos adds a bit extra. I wouldn't even consider a atmos soundbar, as it'll just reverb/phasing or angled speakers to create a fake overhead effect.

Spend your money on a proper system

We've had our soundbar for around 4 years now and it's decent but hardly game changing but it saves having to have a full audio setup in the front room and the costs that come with it.

Don't get me wrong it does a good job at giving the impression of stuff flying around you etc

thanks for the replys, would love a 5.1 system - but im married! and i couldn't get away with speakers everywhere!

thou i might look at sonos system

I have the Samsung Q950A Atmos soundbar.
It's a big step up from my old Yamaha 5.1 setup I had plus the surround speakers and sub are wireless so no mess.

It may not have speakers in the ceiling but the 'fake' effects still sound very very good and it's a lot better than I thought it would be. I doubted the effectiveness of angled speakers etc but in reality it works very very well. Can't fault it tbh
