first off.

Recently I bought a couple of domains and have been beavering away on a website. Now I'm close to how I want it I'm looking for some hosting.

I've looked at the ochosting thread and seen there's some good ones. Vidahost/Thermaldegree looks quite good (is that someone's company btw?).

Anyway, the domain names are with another company (register1). So my nOOb question is ...

how do I use my domain names with my site hosted with another company?

*holds up hand in shame, yes I know nothing about it.

does it involve lots of waiting and money?

I had a look and they're a bit more expensive, £49yr (reg1) vs £30 (vida). I only need some webspace, say 20mb and space to hold a forum... so worst case is about 300mb.

I think I've bodged. SHould have got domain and space from same place. Mistake number 1.

so I could keep my domains at register1 (they're very fast) and in effect, channel it to a webhost where my files are stored, for example todhost or vida.

I noticed on vida that I could "transfer" a domain to them for free, what's that all about?

....when signing up for domains and hosting you can register your domain name with company 1, and buy your hosting from company 2. Then you log into the domain control panel and change the nameservers to the nameservers which company 2 will tell you to use.

A domain transfer is when you move the domain to another registrar. Which means little really - I wouldn't do this unless I was unhappy with the current registrar (for example, years ago I transferred all my domains away from 1&1 because they were *useless*). GTLD (com/net/org) domain transfers also extend the registration period by one year. Some (small, crap, kiddy) hosts have been known to take their customers' domains with them when they shutdown (ie, register domains under their name, which is, well, illegal and bad) and this is why people advise on using a separate company for the domain and hosting aspects :)

now I see. sweet.

so I would just "require hosting space for this domain"

I think I'll sort it out tomorrow.
