Hi

Does anyone know of any partiular reason why houses in the Dominican Republic are so cheap compared to other carribean islands?

Its uber poor and dirty outside of touristy areas, bandits are rife and it has a lot of bother with Cuba still.

Only the holiday places are safe and clean tbh, outside of them are not the nicest of places to go.

People who buy holiday homes abroad usually want to stay away from a touristy place and want there own space - The Dominican Republic doesnt offer this, shame really as it was one of the finest places ive ever been too.

because it is a very poor and primative island , there is no comparison between the DR and somewhere like barbados

Do you think it will prosper any time soon and go the same way as Barbados has and the turks & Caicos are going?

nope , there is no money on the island , the main income now is from tourism and bananas , both these industries are run and owned by US and spanish companies so all money generated is leaving the island , the politcal instability of Haiti is not helping either , in case you don't know Haiti is the other half of the island has has a coup/uprising every 3rd Thursday :D

as a contrast the banana industry in barbados ( and windward isles ) is locally owned and prices have been propped up ( until recently ) by agreements with the UK , the tourist industry is mainly locally owned

jamaica which is generally a poor country ( not to the DR level though ) is again suffering from foreign ownership of its revenue making businesses , the resorts are mainly US owned and the high end shopping owned by Indian businessmen

Consider that the indigenous people of the island live in huts and only 40% of the Island has running water and electricity its no wonder. The only other real industry is the export of Amber Rock. This again is predominantly owned and milked by Small to medium German companies.

after just coming back 2 days ago i have to say its a lovely place but like above, outside the tourist areas its very poor.

there is only about 4 hours of electric a day according to our rep, but hotels have there own generators.

Funiest thig out there are taxis. Single Seat motorbikes with 4 or 5 people hanging on for dear life at one time

Would you consider it a bad idea to look at buying a villa in a custom built complex in somewhere like Sousa (which seems like a nice resort listed in all the holiday mags)

I played a few football games in the shadow of their national stadium with the locals:D

Not a great place in the towns though, our bus driver drove past the police, waved, whilst drinking a beer!
