Doner Meat

how many people have got food poisoning from kebabs? I don't mean a bit of the runs in the morning, that's probably the larger or the chilli sauce. I don't know anyone who has got food poisoning from a kebab. Chinese and Indian is a different storey though.

I've only ever had doner meat twice. The first time, I was sober and it was foul.

Then all my friends were like 'OMFG! YOU HAVE TO BE DRUNK!!!!'

So I sampled some whilst heavily inebriated. From a recommended parlour of mechanically recovered meat products, I must add...

It still tasted foul. The culinary equivelant of dry-humping your own naked grandparents whilst chewing on their freshly soiled underwear.

I havn't tried it drunk but it tastes like Complete filth.

Something not quite right about it, does it have 60 different meats in it ?

I get too many different flavours from it and it makes me wanna hurl :p

This is my concern, it just seems to go through a cycle of heating and cooling, reheating and cooling. Seems to be completely against standard health and safety.

So does the oil used to fry chips in a chippy.

I've thought that myself,if you walk past the same shop the next day & see it sitting there on the turny thing ready to be fired back up the next night

Yeah this is what I think but I think the way it's cooked probably means it's ok as when it spins round only the outer layer is cooked, so when that part if cut off the rest is still uncooked but that doesn't sound very healthy

Not food poisoning as such but I ate a kebab and a few hours later developed a severe stomach ache.

I proceeded to make myself sick and the entire kebab came up in stages - my stomach had refused to digest any of it.

After that I needed no encouragement, I was puking constantly and spent the next day bed ridden with barely the energy to stand.

Needless to say I don't eat kebabs any more.

I love it :D

The doner meat is reformed and heavily spiced making it impossible to determine what part(s) of the animal it came from. This is probably what's caused much of the uncertainty and speculation surrounding the ingredients of doner meat: claims range from lamb off-cuts to rat offal.

:D

I used to eat Doner's all the time, still do occasionly even when not drunk. Though I only do so when it's fresh at the local kebab place though, it's quite nice if you go to a good kebab house.

I normally just get the Shish Kofte's now as they are kept in the chiller and are cooked in front of you and are amazingly nice.

I've never been ill directly as a result of eating a Kebab, I've not had a bad one.

Express Diner next to Whitefriars in Coventry does a lovely Donner meat batch, with mayonnaise and salad - it was the first one I've had sober (at lunch, gawwwwd....). I was very impressed with it, of course it's not on par with a meal out but it was perfectly palatable and filling :)

Their fries kick ass too :D

Argghh now you got me all hungry for a big dirty stinking kebab, only thing is that i cant actually eat till after 6pm as im fasting:(....mmmm might pick up a few kebabs on my way home for my mum so that she dont have to cook anything tonight.

Makes me laugh that people actually call those miserable excuses for a kebab "doner" over here.

In Germany the turks have doner restaurants and the meat is absolutely and utterly leagues above what is sold in the UK. It tastes beautiful, comes in a quarter of crisp turkish bread (100x better than soggy pitta) and is lavished with veg on top. I can eat 2 in a row and be limited only by my not-so-expansive stomach.

Compared to the filth over here they are truly gourmet and not only that they are actually CHEAPER to boot! I wish you could all taste one just so you know what I mean. :(

EDIT - Pretty much like this!

way to go to make me sad, that thing looks delicious

but yeah not much beats a nice greasy doner kebab no matter which country it comes from

although on a side note, 'ckicken kebabs', i dont know if anyone has seen a fresh chicken kebab log thingie, but it just looks like a stack of chicken skins, nearly put me off my chicken kebab :)

I have had them and they are superb, as you said leagues ahead of anything i have had here.

I have been to the turkish 'kebab' shops in france aswell, they rock aswell, but they do all manner of chicken and lamb doners, tikkas etc etc.
